Ethics in research and critical approach of info data

By Serge DAUCHY
Very broad way to compare thesis of student
Have to prove and proof where did u read them. Can’t say u have the feeling, thinking
that u read it somewhere. Students can use and make footnotes or biography,
paraphrase it. => This is the original written by (name) in (year), not necessary on
scientific articles, may be research proposal put on internet and specify the date –
which one is older.
Style, use of words, format… different, changes => ways to find out something
wrong, where someone takes it over.
ETHICS
Etymology: Ethos – customs, habit, use => Moral principles
Ethics is commonly understood as rules for distinguishing between right and wrong
=> Ethical/moral golden rules in religious to identify what is right and wrong.
Ethical philosophy
Aristotelian Ethics: Nicomachean Ethics (Aristote)
We are not studying in order to know what virtue is, but to become good, for
otherwise there would be no profit in it”
- Aristotelian Ethics is the attempt to offer a rational response to the question of
how humans should best live;
- Aristotle regarded ethics and politics are 2 related but separate fields of study:
o Ethics: examines the good of the individuals
o Politics: examines the good of the government (City or Polis): make rules of
general bahaviour of citizens
Ethics of Confucius: the superiority of personal exemplification over explicit rules of
behavior.
Explicit rules of behavior: If u kill people, you will be sentence to death.
 Personally, you think the death sentence is appropriate. You are against death
penalty.
 Criminal code of the country: politics – death sentence
Ethics and law can be different:
LEGAL but UNETHICAL: death penalty (1 reason for refusing Turkey to get into
European community, they are required to abolish as it is not accepted in European
ethic.
ILLEGAL but ETHICAL: Gandhi: peaceful civil disobedience
There is a parallel between Aristotelian and Confucius

Ethics as method, procedure, or perspective for deciding how to act and for analyzing
complex problems and issues. => ETHICS IN RESEARCH METHODOLOGY: THE
WAY OF COLLECTING AND PROCESSING DATA
Ethics as professional standard – VERY HARD FOR FINANCE

ETHICAL NORMS IN RESEARCH

- Aim of research: to have new knowledge about a new topic (maybe new method
applied only), not for yourself but also for general public => make your knowledge
general to everybody (like adding a brick to build the house).
- Social science vs HARD SCIENCE
