Stonehenge

Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire,

England.

Stonehenge consists of a set of ancient standing stones

arranged in a circular design.

Each stone is massive. They are very big and heavy.

Some of the stones sit on top of other stones.

One of the largest upright stones measures about 6.7m (22ft)

off the ground and a further 2.4m (7.9ft) below the ground.

People have often wondered how the stones were moved to

the site and how they were placed in their current positions,
considering their size and weight and without the help of
modern machinery.

Some archaeologists believe the site may have been used as a

burial ground or a place of worship.

It is believed that the standing stones date back to about

2500 BCE (that makes Stonehenge over 4500 years old).

Stonehenge was listed as a World Heritage Site in 1986.

Visitors to Stonehenge are no longer allowed to walk amongst

or touch the stones as this was causing the site to erode.
