FINAL REQUIREMENT IN DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS

Problem Sets

1. Sulfates in solution with concrete can cause microstructural effects leading to deterioration of
the cement binder at a rate proportional to the amount at any instant. Initially, there is 50 mg of
sulfate present and after 8 years, the material has increased 15% of its original mass. Find the
mass of the material after 12 years.
2. A soil with 80°F is placed in a laboratory of constant temperature 50°F at time t=0 and at the
end of 6 minutes, the sample has cooled to a temperature of 75°F. What is the temperature of the
sample at the end 60 minutes?
3. A concrete mixer transport truck contains 1000 gal of concrete mixture in which 80lb of
cement is contained. The mixture containing 1.6lb of cement to the truck runs into at the rate of 6
gal/min. The mixture kept uniform by mixing, runs out of the mixer at the rate of 4gal/min. Find
the amount of cement in solution in the tank at the end of 10 minutes.
4. Termites are threat in the field of Civil Engineering. The population of termites in a certain
house is known to increase at a rate proportional to the number of termites. If after two years the
population has doubled and after 3 years the population is 20,000, find the number of termites
initially living the house.
5. A metal sample initially at 40°C is put into a 190°C laboratory machine at 7:00 am. It is found
that the temperature T(t) of the metal is 50°C after 85 minutes. When will the sample be 60°C?
6. Construction materials retail price index in NCR is expected to decrease in the following
months. In January, there is 2.5% and moved down at a pace of 1.9% in March. If the rate is
proportional to the cost of materials, determine the month when the rate be in 1.5%.
7. Thorium in rock raw materials used for prediction of building materials is known to decay at a
rate proportional to the amount present. If initially there is 100mg of the material present and
after 3 hours it is observed that the material is 80mg, find the time at which the material has
decayed to half of its initial mass.
8. A reinforcing bar at a temperature of 35°C is placed in a site at a constant temperature of
45°C. If after 10 minutes the temperature of the bar is 40°C, find the temperature of the bar after
20 minutes.
9. The temperature of asphalt is initially at 30°F. If after 10 minutes its temperature is 45°F. Find
the time at which the material is ready to be installed and compacted in at least 50°F. (Tm=95°F)
10. A 50 gallon concrete mixture machine is to be cleaned by piping in pure water at 1 gal/min. ,
and allowing the concrete mixture to flow out at the rate of 2 gal/min. If the tank initially
contains 150 pounds of cement, a) how much cement is left in the tank after 1 hour?
