LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET # 2

“FACTORING”

Learning Competency: M8AL-Ia-b-1 The learner factors completely different types of polynomials
(difference of two cubes, perfect square trinomials, and general trinomials)

INTRODUCTION:

A. Factoring Polynomials with Difference of Two Cubes

A polynomial in the form is called the

a 3 – b3
difference of two cubes.

Example : Factor:  x 3−8

Step 1: Get the cube root of each term and it is always positive
at the middle of both term.
Step 2: “Write What You See” If you disregard the parenthesis
and the cubes in step 1, you should see:

Step 3: “Square-Multiply-Square” If you square the first term, x,

you get x2. If you multiply the two terms, x and 4, you get 4x.
Finally, if you square the second term, 4, you get 16.

Step 4: “Same, Different. End on a Positive” This will determine

the signs of the problem. The first sign should be the same as the
original question, the next sign should be different then the first,
and the last sign should always be positive.

Step 5: Write the final answer.

B. Factoring Perfect Square Trinomials

Perfect square trinomial is the result of squaring a binomial. A perfect square trinomial has first
and last terms which are perfect squares and a middle term which is twice the product of the square
root of the first and last terms.

To factor perfect square trinomials:

1. Get the square root of the first and last terms
2. List down the square root as sum or difference of two
terms

Example:
1. Factor 4 x2 −4 x +1
Is this a perfect square trinomial? Yes, since both 4 x2 and 1 are perfect squares and 4 x is twice the
product of 2 x and 1.
a. Square root of the first term: √ 4 x 2=2 x
b. Square root of the last term: √ 1=¿ 1
c. List down the square roots as sum or difference of two terms
(2 x−1)(2 x−1)∨¿

C. Factoring General Trinomials

General Trinomials - A trinomial is an algebraic expression having three terms.

Learn FOIL multiplication. You might have already learned the FOIL method, or "First, Outside, Inside,
Last," to multiply expressions like (x+2) (x+4). It's useful to know how this strategy works before we get to
factoring:

 Multiply the First terms: ( x +2)( x+ 4) =  x 2 +¿ ¿

 Multiply the Outside terms: ( x +2)( x+ 4) = x 2+ 4 x + ¿ ¿
 Multiply the Inside terms: ( x +2)( x+ 4) = x 2+ 4 x +2 x +¿ ¿
 Multiply the Last terms: ( x +2)( x+ 4) = x 2+ 4 x +2 x+ 8
 Simplify: x2+4x+2x+8 = x2+6x+8

Example:

1. Factor x ²+9 x+ 14
 Identify the first, middle and last term.
First term is x ²
middle term is 9 x
last term is 14
 Factor the first term.
x ²=( x)(x )
 Factor the last term.
the factors of 14 are (1 x 14 = 14) and (2 x 7 = 14)
 Identify the sum of the given factors
(1 x 14=14) and (2 x 7=14)
(1+14=15) (2+7=9)
 Choose the given factors whose sum is equal to the
middle term.
(2+7=9) is the right answer since the numerical coefficient of the middle term is 9.
 Express the factors into two binomials.
x ²+9 x+ 14=(x +2)(x +7)

 Check by multiplying the two factors.

REFLECTION

A perfect square trinomial is a value that the first and last term is perfect square. The sign of
the factored integers depends on the sign between the first and middle term.
As a student, how will you use a perfect square trinomial in your daily life activities? Write your
answer in your journal notebook.
