PRESIDENT'S
WORD

The uniqueness of UTMSAM was originally established to increase the incentives of

mathematics and statistics at the University of Toronto
UTMSAM in the Mississauga. However, we have thrived to become so much more.
UTMSAM has become a center-stage for some of the brightest and
"new normal"
most creative students on campus, mostly in the field of
mathematics, statistics, computer science, economics, and other
quantitative fields. We are proudly running two projects

President of UTMSAM professors. We also recruited an event coordination team with
creative students from a diverse background. Over the summer
transition process, our team is constantly coming up with some of
the most innovative initiatives and planning the implementations,
which will be further highlighted in this proposal. Our goal is to
encourage students from diverse backgrounds to connect and
collaborate while maintaining a proper social distance. Students
will be given the opportunity to explore their field of passion in the
comfort of their homes with UTMSAM. In such chaotic and
challenging times, students realize that UTMSAM is part of the
solution, a platform that helps them navigate through academic,
social life, and career challenges. By joining UTMSAM via a
partnership, we share an identical core value: to bridge the
knowledge gap between lectures and the industries. With your
support, students will receive better resources and guidance to
navigate through these difficult times and bring value to your
organization.

Introduction to 3D AlgoTrade Project Series I: Probability
Modelling Workshop in Poker

A quick overview of UTMSAM's
initiatives, team, and future
events. For the second half of the
event we conducted a workshop
for 3D modelling with Python and
Matplotlib. As our first event of
the year, we received great
feedback and students looked
forward to UTMSAM's future
event.
AlgoTrade is a fully automated
stock market trading algorithm
consisting of multiple diversified
trading strategies, which makes up
a whole strategy portfolio. The
three main approaches were
reinforcement learning, multifactor
investing, and option hedging.
The talk was given by Professor
Mike Pawliuk regarding poker.
Poker uses probability theory and
statistics in many different ways.
We talked about probability and
odds, hypergeometric distributions
and ranges. Great feedback were
received from the students.

FUTURE EVENTS OVERVIEW
MSC Orientation
In collaboration with MCSS (UTM Math & Computer
Science Society), DSC (Developer Student Clubs), WISC
(Women in Science and Computing club), UTM Robotics
and ASC (Association for Computer Scientists), we help
first year students get adjusted to university life. With
many events happening in two-week span.
This orientation will make sure first year students have
all the tools and guidance that they need to be
successful. In collaboration with the clubs listed above,
there will be welcome packages provided in electronic
form.
Hack the Case
Hack the Case is a combination of Hackathon, Case
Competition, and Workshops.
During a regular hackathon, after the competition is
complete, it is very hard for developers to move
forward with their product and scale up their ideas. A
case competition helps drive that passion for the
hackathon further to create a feasible product with
strong potential to scale up.
Hack the Case will be an online event, where developers
in UTM get an opportunity to develop an application
with real-life applications. Winners will be provided the
resources and platforms to turn their product into a
startup. Hack The Case is an online event under safety
considerations.
Synergy Conference
Synergy Conference is a continuation of Tech in
Business 2020. We aim to organize the event on a larger
scale both in terms of our panelists and our audiences.
UTMSAM’s goal is to bring awareness to the barriers
between the business world and the technological
aspect. This events aim to shed lights on how to apply
students' expertise such as machine learning or other
quantitative skills in the fields of quantitative finance,
project management, marketing, human resources.
Synergy Conference will be a collaborative effort
between UTMSAM and UTM IMI Business Association.
The Show - Night of
the Nerds
In collaboration with MCSS (UTM Math & Computer
Science Society), DSC (Developer Student Clubs), WISC
(Women in Science and Computing club), UTM Robotics
and ASC (Association for Computer Scientists), we are
hosting its inaugural event, The Show, where we will be
showcasing our university-recognized technical
projects and efforts to the broader community.
Your organization’s HR team is probably used to going
to events, talking about your organization in front of
students. This event is quite different, we will present
our amazing community and meet skilled students who
are excited to potentially contribute to your
organizations.
