1 General Information
The REL670 distance protection template is used for testing the main protection functions of the ABB
REL670 relay. This template comprehends different modules for testing the most important protection
functions. It is designed and configured for use with the ABB REL670 V1.B A32 XRIO converter which is
included in this template. For more information about the converter, see the user manual of the REL670
XRIO converter.
Note: The template is designed and built for the applications of the Test Universe 3.00 software.
Annotations:
Although this template is developed particularly for the relay specified above, it can also be used
for testing similar protection relays of the REL670 line.
The OMICRON PTTs are designed for an experienced OMICRON user. The user should be
familiar with the Test Universe software and the XRIO technology (see
http://www.omicron.at/products/training/ for training information).
Note: IMPORTANT!!! The settings of the Analog modules you will find in "Additional Information ->
Hardware Configuration -> Analog modules!!!! This settings should be entered, otherwise the test of
distance, overcurrent and SOTF protection function will be not correct! There is only a one CT and VT
transformer set of protection function for all 3 phases. The SOTF function is linked to Distance
Transformer Configuration block.
Note: If higher currents are needed for testing (e.g. relays with Inom = 5 A), the current output
configuration can be adapted (e.g. set to 3 x 25 A).
In the Analog Outputs dialog box, the voltage and current outputs have to be routed to the name
variables. Figure 3 illustrates the Analog Outputs configuration.
In the Binary / Analog Inputs dialog box, configure the signals as follows:
3 trigger signals set to Trip A, Trip B and Trip C
Note: The binary inputs are preset to potential free. Change these predefined settings to the values
needed at the test site.
Route the signals configured in the Binary / Analog Inputs dialog box to the following binary inputs:
Trip A to binary input 1
Trip B to binary input 2
Trip C to binary input 3
Relay PICKUP OCLN to binary input 4
Relay PICKUP DISTANCE to binary input 5
Relay PICKUP OCLL to binary input 6
CB Phase A (52a) to binary input 7
CB Phase B (52a) to binary input 8
CB Phase C (52a) to binary input 9
If the Start signal is not used, pick-up and drop-off of the distance starting functions cannot be tested.
Note: The circuit breaker auxiliary contact is required for the trip test with circuit breaker. If the circuit
breaker auxiliary contact cannot be connected to the binary inputs, the trip test with circuit breaker can not
be performed.
There are no restrictions on the hardware. You can use a CMC56, CMC156 or a CMC256 for testing (The
development tests are performed with a CMC256-6).
5 Functional Range
The test modules are grouped according to the tested protection function. The REL670 distance
protection test template includes OMICRON test modules for the following protection functions:
Pick-up and drop-off of the:
The test modules are activated automatically when the template is loaded. If a protection function is
deactivated in the test object, the corresponding test modules are deactivated automatically. Once a test
module has been deactivated, it will not be activated automatically, even if the corresponding protection
function is reactivated. In this case, activate the protection function manually or reset the template to the
initial state (all modules activated) as follows: On the Test menu, point to User Command, and then click
CheckAllModules.
Note: Test modules will only be unchecked after the test object or the hardware configuration has been
opened during a test.
The REL670 distance protection test template can be extended by the user to allow testing the protection
functions currently not supported. It is possible to add any test modules to the existing templates. The
additional test modules will not affect the template, but they will not be deactivated automatically.
by a ramp increasing the variable under test until the pick-up value is reached. The test of drop-off values
is done in a similar way by decreasing the tested value until the drop-off value is reached.
The trip times are tested by simulating a fault which exceeds the pick-up value and the specific
tolerances. This results in a trip command of the tested protection function. The time between the
simulation of the fault and the reception of the trip signal is measured and evaluated.
Note: Do not only rely on the automatic assessment of test points in the test modules but check the
plausibility of all test results manually to achieve maximum reliability of the test results.
8 Template Structure
The structure of the REL670 distance protection test template is shown below.
For the fault type A-N and the fault type A-B-C the fault condition is simulated on the reactance (X) length.
Thereby the voltages keep their initial condition and the current(s) are simulated with the negative
reactance angle. For the Fault type B-C a second phase failure is simulated.
Note: For testing the Distance Starting Overcurrent IMinOpPP of zone 3, the Distance Starting
Overcurrents IMinOpPP of other zones should be bigger then IMinOpPP of the Zones 3, if the other zones
are bigger or identic as the zone 3. The same is valid for the testing of the Distance Starting Overcurrent
IMinOpPE of zone 3.
For the fault type A-N and the fault type A-B-C the fault condition is simulated on the reactance (X) length.
Thereby the voltages keep their initial condition and the current(s) are simulated with the negative
reactance angle. For the Fault type B-C a second phase failure is simulated.
Note: For testing the impedance Starting IMinOpPP of zone 1, the impedance Starting IMinOpPP of other
zones should be bigger then IMinOpPP of the Zones 1, if the other zones are bigger or identic as the zone
1. The same is valid for the testing of the impedance Starting IMinOpPE of zone 1.
The zone trip time is tested by a test shot placed at 90% of each active zone. These shots are set on the
impedance line direction.
Note: The test current is linked to the template controller distance section of the ABB REL670 XRIO-
converter, where a current 1,1 * IMinOpPP zone1 is calculated for the test if IMinOpPP zone1 is greater
than 1 x Ir. If none, the test current gets calculated to 1 *Ir.
Note: Possibly there are more test shots than necessary in the test modules as shown in Figure 9. In this
case, delete all unnecessary test points. The unnecessary test points can be identified by a very small
impedance value - nearly zero (e.g. 8.333e-10 µΩ) or the test points with %of Line length.
Note: If the test current is too high, the module cannot execute the test as shown in Figure 10. The tested
and pink colored shot points are out of range. In this case remove the link of the test current and set the
ITest manually. Please note that the ITest should be greater than IMinOpPP / 2 for phase-phase loops,
greater then IMinOpPE for phase-earth loops and greater than IMinOpPP / sqrt(3) for phase-phase-phase
loops.
The distance reach zone is tested by test shots placed at 94% and 106% of each active zone. These
shots are set on the 90° and 0° lines for all forward directed zones, alternatively 180° and 270° for all
reverse directed zones.
The unnecessary test points can be identified by a very small
impedance nearly zero (e.g. 8.333e-10 µΩ) or the zone reference is set to "Line length".
Note: If the test current is too high, the module cannot execute the test as shown in Figure 10. The tested
and pink colored shot points are out of range. In this case remove the link of the test current and set the
ITest manually. Please note that the ITest should be greater than IMinOpPP / 2 for phase-phase loops,
greater then IMinOpPE for phase-earth loops and greater than IMinOpPP / sqrt(3) for phase-phase-phase
loops.
8.8 Backup Overcurrent (BUOC) Pickup for forward and reverse direction
For testing the pick-up and the drop-off value, the OMICRON Ramping test module is used. This module
allows testing the pick-up and drop-off values of the BUOC overcurrent stages. There are two test
modules. The pick-up and drop-off of the following fault types for forward and reverse direction are tested:
Fault type A-N
Fault type A-B-C
Note: If the instantaneously overcurrent 50 or 50N is the pickup value for forward or reverse direction, this
one should not be tested. The instantaneously overcurrent 50 or 50N need a additional binary input for the
pickup!!!
8.9 Backup Overcurrent (BUOC) Trip Time for forward and reverse direction
For testing the trip time value of the BUOC overcurrent stages, the OMICRON Overcurrent test module is
used. Every fault loop is tested with a separate overcurrent module for each direction. The trip times of the
following fault types are tested in the forward and reverse direction:
Fault type A-N
Fault type A-B-C
The test shots for each fault type are set relative to the pick-up setting values.
Note: It's allowed only a one stage to set as IDMT. The IDMT stage must have a lowest pickup value.
Note: It's not allowed to set two stages with similar pickup values. But if you have this settings, please
then set the stage with lesser time to lower stage.
8.10 Backup Overcurrent (BUOC) Directional test for forward and reverse direction
For testing the overcurrent directional minimum and maximum angles, the OMICRON Ramping test
module is used. The directional angle is tested with two ramp per test module. The first ramp state tests
the maximum directional angle and the second module tests the minimum directional angle. The trip times
of the following fault types are tested in the forward and reverse direction:
Fault type A-N
Fault type A-B-C
The following figures show how the directional elements are calculated for the directional test.
Figure 14: Directional maximum and minimum angles for LLL faults
Note: If the impedance of the SOTF thresholds UPh< and IPh< is in the zone 2, the SOTF test shouldn't
be correct. .
