How Does the EMES System Work?

STEP #1 – EMES Meter Connection

1
The EMES® meter devices are placed on your utility meters and monitor
electricity usage and energy demand every 1 minute in order to make instant
savings decisions.

STEP #2 – EMES Portal Internet Software

2 The electricity and utility information is then sent to a web based software
program to be analyzed instantly.

The system determines how much energy is being used, prices of energy in
the market, and makes energy saving decisions.

STEP #3 – EMES Controls

3 EMES power controllers are installed to any energy load source or connected
directly to the existing building EMS system and will turn down power when a
peak demand is reached or shut off out of hours.

intervals

At the end of each billing period a report will indicate:

 The total CFT per interval
 Total CFT for the month
 The maximum peak intervals
 The time and date when it took place
 The second and third peak demands including their times and dates
 The total CFT used per square foot and per dwelling
 The system shall maintain a record and generate a report of the previous 24
month’s 10 highest peak demands, including their times and dates.

Composite Energy Graphs for All Sites

EMES will generate composite graphs showing:

 The last 24 hours of electrical conditions including energy consumed (kWh), real power (kW),
power factor (%) used every 30 minutes for all sites.
 The last 24 hour of natural gas usage in MBTU every 30 minutes for all sites.
 The last 24 hours of domestic water usage in CFT every 20 minutes for all sites.

Carbon Footprint

EMES will calculate the carbon footprint for each utility and utilities in aggregate—running graph
showing pounds of carbon released for the last 24 hours and indicating the source of the carbon,
for each site.

Carbon Foot Print Comparative Report:

All carbon data recorded by the EMES will be
shown as Carbon Discharge per sq ft and by
dwelling. It will indicate type of dwelling and
occupancy (sq ft, % offices, % community center, %
common areas, % dwellings)

Load Response: At a Glance

• What is Load Response?

• Load Response is the reduction of electrical consumption by customers in
response to:
– High wholesale electricity prices
– System resource capacity needs
– System reliability events

• Load Response programs are used to help maintain electric system stability
(preventing brownouts and blackouts) and reduce the need for additional
generation resources.
Load Response Curtailment Options:

Load Curtailment
Shut-off non-essential equipment or assets (lighting, elevators,
cycling HVAC equipment, or raise temperature set points, etc.)

Load Shifting
Shift planned schedules of operation to off-peak times (typically
industrials).

On-site Generation
Switch building electric loads to backup generators
Why Load Response?

• Environmentally better option than building new power plants

• Reduce wholesale power prices by alleviating short supply causing price spikes

• Smart System Integration / Meters are an inexpensive solution to a growing problem.

• Load Response can also increase energy efficiency

• Financial benefits for the customer through various programs

• Avoids the need to run high price - low efficiency generation during system peaks

• Lowers overall system capacity requirements

• Increases the reliability of grid and rewards energy consumers that are willing to curtail load as
a way of helping maintain system reliability

• Lowers price volatility
