ABSTRACT

Higher noise level in heavy industries is harmful for workers. It causes ill effects like hearing loss, tired, weakness,
higher blood pressure on health of industrial workers. Therefore, to improve the environment of the workplace and
reduce unwanted noise in industries it is very important to find out effective and harmless noise control methods.
The research work was conducted to investigate use of natural materials for industrial noise reduction to give
effective solution for existing industrial noise problem .specimens having size of 75 mm (dia.) and 12.5mm, 25mm
(thick.) were cast. Noise reduction coefficients of prepared specimens were calculated by using an experimental set-
up. Experimental set-up consisted Noise level meter, function generator, speaker. Noise reduction capacity of
materials was calculated by using Noise reduction coefficient (NRC). Effectiveness of natural materials for
industrial noise reduction is discussed in this paper.

Keywords: Noise Reduction.

I. INTRODUCTION

Environmental noise pollution is a form of air pollution which has very adverse direct
and cumulative effects on the health and degrades working, and living environments of well-
being with corresponding real socioeconomic losses. Noise pollution is an environmental
problem all over the world, which has very harmful effects on health and life of the people who
are exposed to continuous noise throughout the workday, may leads to some injuries such as
hearing loss, weakness in nerves and pain in internal tissues, heart problems, and even higher
blood pressure sustaining for long term. There is growing evidence that noise pollution is not
merely an annoyance; like other forms of pollution, it has wide-ranging adverse health, social,
and economic effects.

2. REVIEW OF LITERATURES:
In this connection the following literature has been reviewed,

1. MohdJailaniMohdNor, et.al. [2010]

This paper deals with ,The verification of the estimated acoustical absorption coefficient
in uncompressed condition using rigid frame Johnson- Allard Model are shown for three
different thicknesses of industrially processed coir fiber mixed with binder latex.
Measurements were conducted in impedance tube on normal incidence sound absorption
of coir fiber. It is well known that the absorption behavior of a porous material varies
during compression and affects the physical parameters. In these analyses, formulas
proposed by Castagnede are employed to predict the compression effect on the absorption
of coir fiber which takes into account the modifications of the physical parameters during
compression.

This paper Elucidates the Noise Absorption Coefficient (NAC) of coconut coir fiber was
increased at all frequency when they were backing with Woven Cotton Cloth (WCC)
andperforated panel with 0.20 perforation ratio have been tested to measure its sound
absorption coefficient. At low frequency, the NAC have significant increasing. This is
because WCC have higher flow resistivity than coconut coir fibers; so that sound can be
dissipated as it travels through material significantly. The results from the experimental
tests show that it has good acoustic properties at low and high frequencies and can used
to be an alternative replacement of synthetic based commercial product. By using the
porous layer and perforated plate backing to coconut coir fiber, the sound absorber panel
shows a good potential to be an environmentally friendly product. This innovative sound
absorption panel has a bright future because they are cheaper, lighter and
environmentally compare to glass fiber and mineral based synthetic materials.

the number and power of noise and vibration, and resulting noise pollution in the many
jobs and in the some large areas. Scientific investigations have revealed that noise and
vibration, which exceed certain limits, adversely affecting the functional and safety
features on the aggregates facilities located in polluted areas, with negative effects on
safety in operation and product quality.

This paper highlights the recent approach of sound attenuation using various absorption
materials, barriers and screen techniques. This paper holds three works. First, it reviews
an introduction on synthetic materials for absorption. Second, it summarizes on organic
materials considerations for acoustic absorber in currently. Finally, it offers a review on
research of using barrier and screens. Experimental measurements were taken by
impedance tube.

In this paper author has invented the potential uses of Salvinia dust as natural sound
reduction material, to give a solution for the existing industrial noise problems.
Specimens having a size of 75 mm (diameter) x 25 mm (thickness) were made by using
Salvinia dust. Salvinia dust was mixed with cement at a ratio of 1:1 and water was added.
Noise Reduction Coefficient of these specimens was investigated by using an
experimental set-up consisted of speaker at one end, propagation tube and a noise level
meter. Noise reduction ability of the materials was quantified by using Noise Reduction
Co-efficient (NRC). It is found that NRC increases with increasing the tile thickness.
Also it was found that tile having grooved surface has shown much higher NRC values
than the tile having flat surface.

transmission loss value and sound absorption coefficient of two different densities (0.5
g/cm3 and 0.8 g/cm3) that were made with three particle sizes (fine, medium, and wool
or excelsior) were used in this study. The sound Transmission loss (TL) value was

measured in a reverberation room, while the sound absorption coefficient was determined
using the impedance tube method. A single-number rating of sound transmission class
(STC) was determined based on TL measurements.

In this paper author elucidate,Current studies are aiming to improve the sound absorption
of coir fiber by implementing combinations of PerforatedPlates (PPs) and air gaps. The
Atalla and Sgrad model along with Johnson-Allard model and Acoustic Transmission
Analysis (ATA) approach are used to estimate the absorption coefficient of the
combination. Measurements are conducted in impedance tube to validate the analytical
results. Outcomes show that the absorptioncoefficient of the panel is governed by the
porosities of the implemented PPs. Reduction in the porosity of the facePP causes the
incident sound to reflect back whereas higher porosity encourages the sound to enter and
be absorbed gradually in the inner compartments.

8. LamyaaAbd AL Rahman, et.al. [2013]

In this paper authors explores Date palm fiber has been utilized as a sound absorber. The
study of the effect of date palm fiber as backing on sound absorption using three types of
perforation plates and porous layers is carried out. The empirical test results illustrate that
this material has good acoustic absorption in the lower and higher frequencies and would
be a viable substitute for industrial products. Using the perforated plate backing, woven
cotton cloth and polyester with date palm fiber, the acoustic absorber plate exhibits high
quality, ease of production and environmental friendliness.

two PPs, the best result is obtained when the inner PP has low porosity and is backed
with an air gap.

In this paper authors, the sound absorption coefficient of perforated facings backed by
porous materials is studied under high sound intensities in the absence of mean flow. The
theoretical considerations are based on the equivalent fluid following the Johnson-
Champoux-Allard approach and the use of the transfer matrix method. To take into
account the high sound levels effects, the air flow resistivity of each layer is modified
following the Forchheimer law. Two specimens of perforated plate are built and tested
when backed by polymeric foam and a fibrous material. A specific impedance tube setup
is developed for the measurement of the surface acoustic impedance for sound pressure
levels ranging from 90 dB to 150 dB at the surface of the perforated facing. To
corroborate the validity of the presented method, two considerations are particularly
depicted in the experimental results: first, the case where the perforated facing and the
porous material are both directly backed by a rigid wall and the case where there is an air
cavity between the porous material and the rigid wall. Good agreement is observed
between the simulation and the experimental results.

3.Need of Study
1. In the construction industries people and architectures are not paying much of the
attention to control the noise pollution, as it is very essential to control the noise because
of its severe consequences.
2. It is very difficult to estimate and control the noise at different workplaces in industry.
3. The motivation behind this project is lot of sound absorption material like; synthetic
fibers, natural fibers & agricultural materials and enhancement in acoustic properties of
organic materials and science.
