CIG1003/1013 Unit 1 Written Task

“The way I am”

WRITING TEMPLATE

Personality Can Change Over a Lifetime, And Usually For The Better
Why do people behave the way they do? This is a question that has generated fierce
scientific debate since the 1960’s. Some psychologists argue that situations--not traits--
are the most important causes of behavior. Some have even argued that personality
traits are parts of our imagination that do not exist at all.
In the past two decades, a large and still-growing body of research has established that
personality traits are very much real, and that how people describe someone’s
personality accurately predicts that person’s actual behavior.
And while personality traits are relatively stable over time, they can and often do
gradually change across the lifespan. What is more, those changes are usually for the
better. Many studies show that most adults become more agreeable, conscientious and
emotionally stable as they age. But these changes tend to unfold across years or
decades, rather than days or weeks. Sudden dramatic changes in personality are rare.
Due to their effects on behavior and continuity over time, personality traits help shape
the course of people’s lives. According to scientific research, personality traits can have
consequences and results in the performance of a person in school and at work,
relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners, life satisfaction and emotional
well-being among others. It is worth mentioning that the performance in those aspects
is also determined by other life circumstances.

Which are the two most outstanding personality traits you have?

My name is Tomás Urra, I am 22 years old, I am a journalism student and I want to talk about
me. I agree that personality traits help shape our lives. However, the effects can be positive and
negative depending on the trait that characterizes us. One of the characteristics that most
characterizes me is that I am an organized person. An example is that I like to have everything
neat and planned. I always make a schedule with the tasks I have in the week to optimize my
time. Another trait I have is that I am cheerful. My friends tell me that I always have a smile on
my face. I try to see the bright side of things and be in a good mood. If I have to help someone, I
will do so with great kindness.

Which is one personality trait you would like to improve or have?

There are traits I would like to change. One of them is being shy. I have a hard time talking to
someone I don’t know. Sometimes when a person asks me something, I blush a lot and try to
avoid it. Besides, I find it hard to participate in activities where people look at me because I
think will make a mistake. This has caused me to meet fewer people.
