In the beginning of the movie when Todd’s boss calling him to the office. Todd’s boss named Dave
informs Todd that their company decided to restructure order performance. The conflicts started when
the entire department got to be outsourced to India in order to reduce the cost. Besides that, Todd’s
task is recruiting his replacement in India and help the staff in India integrate with Western Novelty.
Without a choice, Todd has to accept the task and fly to India to finish his job because the option given
to him is ‘take it or leave it’.

The reasons which influenced the company to decide is, first to reduced cost, to expand their business
because there’s a lot of opportunities that companies can gain markets and learning that many
employees can adapt. Employees can gain a lot of knowledge in different cultures and beliefs and
enhancing their expertise or skills in other countries. Also, to gain more competitive advantage, to meet
the business goals of the company and to contribute to short- and long-term benefits.

What were the conflicts encountered by the new manager in dealing with the place, the people, and the
culture? Cite examples

Mr. Todd arrived in Mumbai. The environment and the surrounding are totally different to his
country. For American like Todd, these situations make him extremely awkward . On Mr. Todd’s first
day, Mr. Todd already made a few mistakes for not knowing the India’s culture. For example, he
carelessly eats by using his left-hand which is look improper according to the India’s culture. Instead of
Mr. Todd’s tasks to train his new replacement in India, he needs train the staff in India as well to interact
with American or to be precised, adopting the American dialog patterns and slang. There are times, he
can’t pronounce the names correctly because of the American accent. He was shocked that he saw a
cow beside the office, in Indian Culture the symbol of cow is symbol of life so cow need to be respected
and honored. His western friend advices him to adapt with India culture because there is a saying in
international business, “Business is based on relationship” and culture is one of the key factor to ensure
a good relationship.
What were the conflicts encountered by the employees in relation to the new manager and the nature

The issues that encountered by the employees in relation to the new manager is communication. When
it comes to communication there are different ways of pronouncing the words. For example, the
employees introduce themselves to Mr. Todd, So Mr. Todd can’t pronounce their name correctly. There
are times, the employees can’t understand the words of Mr. Todd because the way of he’s speaking or
the choose of words that he is spoken. Mr. Todd needs to train them by adopting the American dialog
patterns and slang by communicating the clients and by promoting the products.

How did the manager reconcile the conflicts? What can you say about his management strategies?

He was a very effective manager because he is very adaptive and open to other culture and he accepts
the employees, he is very flexible because he trained the employees well and He accepts and learns the
India’s culture. Todd also gave permission and allows his staff to make their office based on India style as
long as their quality of work is good and the result is; his staffs feel more comfortable. Besides that,
Todd start to believe that there are similarities differences in culture and culture may impact different
managerial styles and management systems and could affect the nature of business negotiations.
