MATTER

Module 1: Matter
Lesson 1: Useful Materials
Lesson objectives:
At the end of the lesson, the learners will be able to:

a) describe the characteristics of

useful materials; and
b) apply useful materials through an
activity.

GET READY!!

Everything around us
is matter. From the soil, the
water, and to the air. The
matter has different
properties that make them
different from one another.

Some types of matter

have properties that make
them good materials for
producing useful products.

Are you ready to learn? Now, I want you to observe

the objects found below and answer the questions next to
them on the next page based on your observation.

Questions:
1. What are these materials?
LET’S LEARN!!

We use the different materials for cleaning, cooking,

eating, and repairing. The usefulness of a certain material
depends on its properties. These are materials that are
durable and in therefore can be reused many times.
However, there are some that are not meant to be reused.
Creative and inventive people still find other ways to use
them.

Now, I want you to visit the link

found below and watch the video. Learn
more about recycling materials.

In this lesson we will focus on the usefulness

of materials that we can find at home. It is very
important to identify its usefulness, so that we will
use them the way they should be used.

Activity 2: Go Around
Instructions: Go around your house. In the chart below, list down five materials that
you can find. Write down each material and its usefulness in a proper

Useful materials can be found at home to

improve your health, destroy harmful
organisms, make life more comfortable, make
work faster and easier, and help protect and
conserve the environment.

We all know that most of the products that

we used at home are in the plastic containers.
What happened to the empty bottles and
containers? Did we dispose it properly? How about
recycling them?

Benefits of Recycling………….

Reduces the amount of waste sent to landfills

and incinerators
 Conserves natural resources such as timber,
water, and minerals
 Increases economic security by tapping a

Instruction: Go around your house. Collect the materials that can be recycled. Watch
videos in Youtube as your guide on how to recycle materials at home.
Note: For those who cannot access internet, watch the video clips that are saved in
your flash drive with a folder name “recycling”.

LET’S REMEMBER!!

The matter is anything that has mass and

occupies space. A useful way to start thinking
about the matter is to think about the different
materials or substances, that it can be made
into a useful one.

No matter what material you choose to recycle, keep in mind that

you are helping the environment. You are making the world a better
place by keeping usable items out of the trash and giving them new
purposes, and having fun in the process.

In this lesson we will focus on the

harmfulness of materials that we can find at home.
It is very important to identify its harmfulness for us
to be aware on preventive measures should be used
to avoid exposure from the toxic materials.

LET’S LEARN!!

Harmful materials are materials that bring hazards such as the

following:

 Materials that are toxic to us.

 Materials that can cause injuries.
 Materials that cannot be dumped straight into the
landfill.
 Can pollute the environment easily.
