Today is World Communion Sunday. We will be celebrating
communion virtually in worship. You are encouraged to prepare
the bread and the cup at home as we partake in the Lord’s Supper
together with the rest of the world.
Welcome to Sunday Worship
18th Sunday after Pentecost, October 4, 2020 10:00 am
Welcome and Announcements
GATHERING AROUND THE WORD
Opening Prayer
Eternal God, give us hearts and lives ready to fully serve you in this
world. Even as we gather to worship you with your church around the
globe this day, open our hearts to be accepting of our brothers and
sisters in your Son, Jesus the Christ, that we may be united in our
worship this day. We pray that we will collectively be emblazoned by
Your Spirit to fully greet, accept and love our neighbors even as we
share communion with you and with one another. AMEN.
Call to Worship
One: The promises of the world turn to ashes and dust,
All: but the promises of God last forever.
One: We come to rekindle the gift of God ablaze within us.
All: The Holy One calls to us: “Come!”
One: Let us worship God!

Hymn All Are Welcome
Let us build a house where love can dwell and all can safely live,
a place where saints and children tell how hearts learn to
forgive. Built of hopes and dreams and visions, rock of faith and
vault of grace; here the love of Christ shall end divisions:
Refrain
All are welcome; all are welcome; all are welcome in this place.
Let us build a house where prophets speak, and words are
strong and true, where all God’s children dare to seek to dream
God’s reign anew. Here the cross shall stand as witness and as
symbol of God’s grace; here as one we claim the faith of Jesus:
Refrain
Let us build a house where love is found in water, wine and
wheat; a banquet hall on holy ground where peace and justice
meet. Here the love of God, through Jesus, is revealed in time
and space; as we share in Christ the feast that frees us:
Refrain
Let us build a house where hands will reach beyond the wood
and stone to heal and strengthen, serve and teach, and live the
Word they’ve known. Here the outcast and the stranger bear the
image of God’s face; let us bring an end to fear and danger:
Refrain

3
Let us build a house where all are named, their songs and
visions heard and loved and treasured, taught and claimed as
words within the Word. Built of tears and cries and laughter,
prayers of faith and songs of grace;
let this house proclaim from floor to rafter:
Refrain
Prayer of Confession
All: With the weepers we weep. With the warriors we yearn for
peace. With the exiles we wander far from home, for our hearts
wander far from you. We live in an uncertain world— time and
again we turn to people who promise us security. But God, you
are our only source of safety. Help us turn to you, our heart’s
true home. Call us again and lead us home. Lord, teach us to
seek our peace in you. Forgive us for the multitude of our
transgressions. Rekindle a spirit of love and self-discipline within
us, through Jesus Christ.
Silent Confession
Assurance of Pardon

One: Our Savior Jesus Christ abolished sin and death and
brought life and immortality to light. By the grace of the
Eternal One, we are forgiven in the power of the Holy
Spirit living within us.

All: In Jesus Christ we are forgiven. Thanks be to God!

PROCLAIMING THE WORD
Prayer of Illumination
Reading from the New Testament
Philippians 3:4-14
If someone else thinks they have reasons to put confidence in the
flesh, I have more: 5 circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of
Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the
law, a Pharisee; 6 as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for
righteousness based on the law, faultless. 7 But whatever were gains
to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I
consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing
Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider
them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having
a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is
through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the
basis of faith. 10 I want to know Christ—yes, to know the power of his
resurrection and participation in his sufferings, becoming like him in his
death, 11 and so, somehow, attaining to the resurrection from the
dead. 12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already
arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ
Jesus took hold of me. 13 Brothers and sisters, I do not consider
myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what
is behind and straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward the
goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ
Jesus. The Holy Bible: New Revised Standard Version. (1989). (Php 3:4-14). Nashville: Thomas Nelson Publishers.
One: This is the Word of the Lord. All: Thanks be to God!

Reading from the Gospel
Mathew 21:33-46
“Listen to another parable. There was a landowner who planted a
vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a wine press in it, and built a
watchtower. Then he leased it to tenants and went to another country.
34 When the harvest time had come, he sent his slaves to the tenants
to collect his produce. 35 But the tenants seized his slaves and beat
one, killed another, and stoned another. 36 Again he sent other slaves,
more than the first; and they treated them in the same way. 37 Finally
he sent his son to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.’ 38 But
when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, ‘This is the
heir; come, let us kill him and get his inheritance.’ 39 So they seized
him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him. 40 Now when the
owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants?”
41 They said to him, “He will put those wretches to a miserable death,
and lease the vineyard to other tenants who will give him the produce
at the harvest time.” 42 Jesus said to them, “Have you never read in
the scriptures: ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the
cornerstone; this was the Lord’s doing, and it is amazing in our eyes’?
43 Therefore I tell you, the kingdom of God will be taken away from
you and given to a people that produces the fruits of the kingdom.
44 The one who falls on this stone will be broken to pieces; and it will
crush anyone on whom it falls.” 45 When the chief priests and the
Pharisees heard his parables, they realized that he was speaking
about them. 46 They wanted to arrest him, but they feared the crowds,
because they regarded him as a prophet.

RESPONDING TO THE WORD

Affirmation of Faith 1 Corinthians 3
We believe that there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;
and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; and there
are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all
of them in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the
Spirit for the common good. To one is given through the Spirit
the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of
knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the
same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to
7
another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another
the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues,
to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are activated
by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually
just as the Spirit chooses. AMEN.

GOING OUT INTO THE WORLD

Hymn
I Come with Joy
I come with joy, a child of God, forgiven, loved and free,
the life of Jesus to recall, in love laid down for me,
in love laid down for me.
I come with Christians far and near to find, as all are fed,
the new community of love in Christ’s communion bread,
in Christ’s communion bread.
As Christ breaks bread and bids us share,
each proud division ends. The love that made us, makes us one,
and strangers now are friends, and strangers now are friends.
The Spirit of the risen Christ, unseen, but ever near,
is in such friendship better known, alive among us here,
alive among us here.
Together met, together bound by all that God has done,
we’ll go with joy, to give the world the love that makes us one,
the love that makes us one.
Benediction

September Stewardship Update
Your CPC leadership thanks you for your continued support in financial
gifts for the ministries of the church. Giving this past month was lighter
than the month prior. While donations are essentially meeting what
was pledged for budget we are still about 25% short of what is needed
to continue to meet our operational needs.
If you have been making gifts in support of the ministries here at Christ
Presbyterian Church, we thank you for your generous heart. If you
have not given recently, we encourage you to consider doing so.
Ways to give from home:
1. Online at www.largocpc.org
2. Through GIVEplus App on Apple or Android devices
3. Mail a gift directly to the church
4. Use the bill pay option through your bank.
Your giving through any of these options allows us to meet the
needs of the ministries that Christ has entrusted us with.
