Introduction

In this day and age, technology advancement infuses all aspects of our lives. One of the most
marked changes has occurred in education field. The application of technology in supporting
synchronous and asynchronous teaching, and learners’ autonomy is a growing practice.
Thereby, learning management systems have developed with embedded instructional tools to
bolster academic organization and learning engagement. (Laster, 2005)

A Learning Management System, or an LMS, is the integration of formal electronic systems in

teaching. It is considered a software that assists learners to access online courses with
advantageous tools, comprised of discussion board, announcements, assessment functions,
and multimedia elements. (Gautreau, 2011) Thanks to its prominent features, an LMS fulfils
diverse needs in e-learning and distance learning. Particularly, the current outbreak of Covid-
19 epidemic, which has interrupted many aspects of life all over the world, challenges
teachers to find teaching alternatives. To resolve this dilemma, numerous webpages have
promoted such as Moodle, Edmodo, Classdojo, Google classroom and so forth. Among of them,
Edmodo stands out owing to its provision of an LMS’ basic functions, friendly interface to
teachers and learners, and its own outstanding characteristics.

This paper will elaborate on Edmodo, its applications in LMS as well as its distinctive features
compared to the other software, Google classroom.
