1. Introduction

As. Moisture contamination and oxidization of the insulation oil make dielectric strength
deteriorate remarkably, many types of conservators have been developed to isolate the
air from the oil.

Air bag type conservator as follows, being superior both in its durability and
maintenance, gives a steady operation of the transformer for a long period.

2. Features
Since in the air bag type conservator the oil is isolated completely from the air by the air
bag, there is no moisture contamination or oxidization of the oil at all.

And no only is its maintenance much easier than those of nitrogen immersed type
conservator, but it can also be reduced in its size and its weight.

Furthermore there is no generation of supersaturated gas from the oil, as the inside of
the conservator is always the same pressure as the atmosphere.

3. Construction

As shown in Fig.1, the conservator is partitioned into two compartments with air bag.

The air bag goes up and down according to the volume of the oil coming from the
transformer through the connecting pipe.
And the position the air bag at that time is indicated by the oil lever indicator.
The oil level indicator has a contact which shows and extraordinary low oil level to
indicate the emergency in the conservator.

3-1 Case
As the case is manufactured in the vacuum proof structure, it is possible to vacuum
the conservator at the same time as the transformer tank to charge the oil into it.
3-2 Air bag
The air bag is composed of nitrite rubber coated nylon fabric, and its non-
permeability, durability, especially against the oil, have already been proved.
3-3 Oil level indicator
The oil level indicator is a dial type and also indirect operation type indicator.
This has a contact in it which shows an abnormal low oil level.
The scale plate is graduated equally. It isn't in proportion to the volume or the
temperature of the oil but to the angle of the oil level indicator arm float.
The "indication of indicator-oil temperature" curve give correct value.

4. Treatment of the conservator


4-1 Packing
Each flange of the conservator is covered by the blind cap.
The oil level indicator is also covered by the protector.
Check up the conservator if there is an injury when you unload it from a truck to
open the packing.
Don't take off blind caps until just before the conservator is attached to the
transformer to avoid dust.
4-2 Attaching to the transformer.
Use the lifting lug for attaching to the transformer. Be careful not to break pipes or
flanges during this work.

5. Oil filling and draining method of conservator, please follow oil filling and draining
process instructions carefully.

6. Transporting method in case of transportation is a unit independently


When a conservator unit is transported independently , each of flanges must be
provided with a blind cover. Inject dry air of N2 gas into the air bag from the breather
mounting flanges finally under a sealing pressure of the atmospheres .

7. Transporting method
If transported with a conservator attached to the transformer , inject dry air or N2 gas
thereto from breather mounting flanges under an internal pressure of the atmosphere
after making oil-side airtight.

8. Maintenance
The maintenance of the air bag type conservator is almost same as that of the open
type conservator.
Confirmation can be made only by an oil level gauge or operation of the breather.

9. Cautions for handling


The handling procedure of conservator is as operation as shown here above. But, full
attention must be paid to the following points.
1) Do not carry out such an operation as operation as exerting force absolutely.
(pressure is exerted over one side of the air bags)
2) Do not carry out such an operation as heating the air bag absolutely. (with air bags
attached, welding of conservator)
3) How to charge the insulation oil is follow that already explained index 4-3,(4)
