vparmodify2(1M) For OA Based Partition Management Systems vparmodify2(1M)

NAME
vparmodify - rename a virtual partition or modify the resources of a
virtual partition

SYNOPSIS
Invoked from operating system (OS):

vparmodify -p vpar_id
[-a rsrc]...
[-d rsrc]...
[-m rsrc]...
[-P new_vpname]

Invoked from Onboard Administrator (OA):

vparmodify { -p vpar_id -N npar_id | -p npar_id:vpar_id }

[-a rsrc]...
[-d rsrc]...
[-m rsrc]...
[-P new_vpname]

Platform Support Remarks

This vparmodify describes functionality on systems with Onboard
Administrator (OA) based partition management. For vparmodify on
systems not running OA based partition management, refer to
vparmodify1(1M) by typing man vparmodify1.

DESCRIPTION
The vparmodify command modifies resources of the specified virtual
partition. The command can also rename the virtual partition.
vparmodify cannot create a virtual partition; use the vparcreate
command for that purpose.

The vparmodify command accepts resource path for all resource

specification. Resource path can be specified in short, medium, or
long format. For example, CPU number 2 located in enclosure 3, blade
6, socket 0 is identified in the short format as 3/6/0/2, in the
medium format as cpucore-3/6/0/2, or in the long format as
enclosure3/blade6/cpusocket0/cpucore2. See resourcepath(5).

Options and Arguments

+ Only the -a, -m, and/or -d options may be specified more than once
in a command. But some syntax forms are restricted. Refer to table
1 for detailed information.

+ The -a and -d options cannot be used on the same command line when
the vPar is UP.

+ Resources allocated with the -a option must be available, that is,

not already assigned to a virtual partition, and they must not
exceed the overall limits of the resources.

vparmodify2(1M) For OA Based Partition Management Systems vparmodify2(1M)

+ Resources to be modified (-m) or deleted (-d) must be currently

assigned to vpar_id.

Violation of any condition is a command error.

vparmodify recognizes the following command line options and

arguments. The options are processed from left to right.

-p vpar_id Specifies the virtual partition to be modified.

vpar_id can be specified either as a number or name.
Required.
When invoked from the OS, the command modifies the
specified virtual partition in the local nPartition.

When invoked from the OA, the vpar_id should be

specified either using the npar_id:vpar_id format or by
using the -N option. When specified in the
npar_id:vpar_id format, npar_id and vpar_id can either
be a number or name. The command modifies the
specified virtual partition in the specified
nPartition.

-a rsrc -a adds resources to a virtual partition.

-d rsrc -d deletes resources from a virtual partition.
-m rsrc -m modifies existing resources in a virtual partition.

rsrc is a hardware resource specification, as described

in detail in the vparresources(5) manpage.

A summary of resource syntax forms is shown in Table 1.

Multiple resource specifications in the same command
are allowed, but some syntax forms are restricted to
specific options, and some are allowed only once. Both
are indicated in Table 1. In any case, resources in
multiple specifications must not repeat or conflict
with each other.

-N npar_id Specifies the nPartition to which the virtual partition

belongs. npar_id can be specified either as a number
or a name. This option is mandatory for the command
invoked from OA.

-P new_vpname Specifies a new name for the virtual partition being

modified, that is, after all modifications are
successfully applied to vpar_id, it is renamed to
new_vpname, assuming no virtual partition with that
name already exists in the current virtual partition
#[62;1H#[K:#[62;1H#[62;1H#[K database.

- 2 - Formatted: August 30, 2011

vparmodify2(1M) For OA Based Partition Management Systems vparmodify2(1M)

A virtual partition name should at least have one of

the following non-numeric character a-z, A-Z, dash (-),
underscore (_), or period (.). No other non-numeric
character is allowed in a virtual partition name. The
maximum length of a virtual partition name is 255
characters including the null character.

The virtual partition name may be changed while the

virtual partition is running.

Notes:

+ The keywords "core" and "cpu" can be used interchangeably in the

command line.

+ Addition and deletion of cores is not supported on the same command

line when the vPar is UP.

+ Specific (by specifying the Hardware path) and non-specific (by

specifying the count) deletion of cores cannot be done on the same
command line when the vPar is UP.

#[62;1H#[K:##[62;1H#[K:##[62;1H#[K:#[62;1H#[62;1H#[K + Non-specific and

socket specific (by specifying socket id and count
of cores from that socket) deletion of cores cannot be done on the
same command line when the vPar is UP.

+ The first field is always one of the (case-insensitive) strings:

cpu, core, io, ioslot, mem, or socket.

vparmodify2(1M) For OA Based Partition Management Systems vparmodify2(1M)

+ num, min, and max are all positive integers.

+ cpu_path or core_path is specified as

enclosure#/blade#/cpusocket#/cpucore#

For example:
Short form: 3/6/0/2
Medium form: cpucore-3/6/0/2
#[62;1H#[K:#[62;1H#[62;1H#[K Long form:
enclosure3/blade6/cpusocket0/cpucore2

+ socket_id is specified as enclosure#/blade#/cpusocket#

For example:
Short form: 3/6/0
Medium form: socket-3/6/0
Long form: enclosure3/blade6/cpusocket0

NOTE: When using socket local syntax (socket:socket_id:cpu::num),

only the number of cores on the given socket may be entered, not
the hardware paths of the individual cores.

+ io_path for:

1) Blade resident I/O is specified as

enclosure#/blade#/IO_hub#/root_complex#/root_port#

For example:
Short form: 3/6/0/1/2
Medium form: iorp-3/6/0/1/2
Long form: enclosure3/blade6/iohub0/iorc1/iorp2

2) I/O bay resident I/O is specified as

enclosure#/IO_bay#/IO_hub#/root_complex#/root_port#

For example:
Short form: 7/1/0/1/2
Medium form: iorp-7/1/0/1/2
Long form: enclosure7/iobay1/iohub0/iorc1/iorp2

#[62;1H#[K:#[62;1H#[62;1H#[K + ioslot_path for:

1) Blade resident I/O is specified as enclosure#/blade#/io_slot#

For example:
Short form: 3/6/1
Medium form: ioslot-3/6/1
Long form: enclosure3/blade6/ioslot1

2) I/O bay resident I/O is specified as enclosure#/iobay#/io_slot#

- 4 - Formatted: August 30, 2011

vparmodify2(1M) For OA Based Partition Management Systems vparmodify2(1M)

For example:
Short form: 7/1/4
Medium form: ioslot-7/1/4
Long form: enclosure7/iobay1/ioslot4
#[62;1H#[K:#[62;1H#[62;1H#[K
Note that there is a one-to-one correspondence between root ports
(specified along with io_path) and ioslots (specified along with
ioslot_path) on SD2 servers. The verbose output of blades and
iobays displayed by parstatus shows the correspondence between
rootports and ioslots.

+ Please note that unlike nPartitions, vPartition ilm_size and size

are specified in MB (megabytes).

The commands round ilm_size and size upward as required to the

granule increment in effect for that memory type. ilm_size and
size may be specified in decimal or in hexadecimal. A hex
specification should be preceded by 0x, as in 0x8000000.

+ Note that cpu related modifications may be effected on a vPar even

in UP state. For any other resource modifications (such as ioslot
or memory), the vPar must be in DOWN state.

SECURITY RESTRICTIONS
When invoked from the OS, this command is restricted to processes
owned by superuser having appropriate parperm privilege. An OA user
with operator privilege level or above can modify virtual partitions
from the OA.

RETURN VALUE
The vparmodify command exits with one of the following values:

0 Successful completion.
1 One or more error conditions occurred.

EXAMPLE
Change the name of the virtual partition called Oslo to Bergen:

vparmodify -p Oslo -P Bergen

Add two processors to the virtual partition Oslo (cpu and core
syntax):

vparmodify -p Oslo -a cpu::2

vparmodify -p Oslo -a core::2

Add two socket-local processors from enclosure 3, blade 6, socket 0 to

the virtual partition Oslo (cpu and core syntax):

vparmodify -p Oslo -a socket:3/6/0:cpu::2

vparmodify -p Oslo -a socket:3/6/0:core::2

Add two processors to the virtual partition Bergen in nPartition

Norway:

vparmodify -p Bergen -N Norway -a cpu::2

Add an I/O device to the virtual partition (io and ioslot syntax):

vparmodify -p Bergen -N Norway -a io:5/1/0/0/2

vparmodify -p Bergen -N Norway -a ioslot:5/1/3

Move two processors from the virtual partition Oslo to the virtual
partition Bergen in the nPartition Norway:

vparmodify -p Oslo -N Norway -d cpu::2

vparmodify -p Bergen -N Norway -a cpu::2

The following examples demonstrate operations that are not supported

when the vPar is UP:

1) Specific and non-specific deletetion on the same command line:

vparmodify -p 1:1 -d cpu:1/1/1/0 -d cpu::1

2) Non-specific and socket specific deletion on the same command line:

vparmodify -p 1:1 -d cpu::1 -d socket:1/1/1:core::1

3) Addition and deletion of cores on the same command line:

vparmodify -p 1:1 -a cpu::4 -d cpu::2

ERRORS
OA syslog contains additional description of errors encountered during
partition operations. Users can view the OA syslog from the OA using
"SHOW SYSLOG OA" command.

#[62;1H#[K:#[62;1H#[62;1H#[K
vparmodify2(1M) For OA Based Partition Management Systems vparmodify2(1M)

"Error: System unable to accept partition commands"

The above error message is printed out under the following
circumstances:
+ Attempting to run command from an OA other than the active OA
in enclosure 1
+ System has been shut down (e.g. with POWEROFF XFABRIC, or
ambient overtemp)
+ The OA has not finished initializing.
In the above scenarios, please ensure the system and OA are completely
up and you are running the command from the active OA in enclosure 1.

vparmodify displays error messages on standard error for any of the

following conditions:

An invalid option is specified.

An invalid value is specified for an option or a value is

omitted.

vpar_id does not exist in the current virtual partition database.

npar_id does not exist.

new_vpname already exists in the current virtual partition

database.

One or more options other than -a, -d, -m is specified more than
once.

For the -a or -m option, an unavailable resource (allocated to

another virtual partition or exceeding the available resource
limit) is specified.
For the -m or -d option, the specified resource is not presently
assigned to vpar_id.

The partition from where the command was invoked did not have
sufficient parperm privileges.

The state of the modified virtual partition following an error depends

on the following factors:

+ If the error is detected during syntax and semantic checks of the

command line, the virtual partition is not changed.

+ If the error is detected while modifying the virtual partition,

then any changes made to the point of the error (working left-to-
right on the command line) will be reverted.

L7-NR-SD2> poweroff partition L7-NR-SD2:L7vpar1 force ovverride

Invalid Arguments

POWEROFF PARTITION {{ nPartition number or name } [ :vPartition number or name ]

[ FORCE ] [ OVERRIDE ] | ALL [ FORCE
] }: Sends a request to gracefully shutdown the specified partition, or all
partitions if ALL FORCE is given instead
of a partition name or number. If the 'FORCE' option is specified, the OS running
in the partition will not perform a
graceful shutdown before power is removed. Graceful shutdown of all partitions is
not possible - ALL must be used
with FORCE. An OVERRIDE option is required to affect a change in mode or when a
destructive operation needs to be
applied to all vPars in an nPar. Warning: This can cause a partition to lose data
and possibly become unstable. This
command can only be executed from the Monarch OA.

L7-NR-SD2> POWEROFF PARTITION L7-NR-SD2:L7vpar1 FORCE OVERRIDE
