IGNITION EXCITER – MAINTENANCE PRACTICES


1. Replacement

WARNING: MAKE SURE THAT THE IGNITION SWITCH IS OFF BEFORE REMOVING THE SPARK
IGNITER OR SPARK IGNITER LEAD ASSEMBLY AS DANGEROUSLY HIGH VOLT-
AGES MAY BE PRESENT. ALLOW FIVE MINUTES AFTER OPERATION FOR ELEC-
TRICAL DISSIPATION BEFORE DISASSEMBLY.

A. Removal

(1) Disconnect electrical harness and igniter leads and remove ignition exciters from the en-
gine by removing three bolts and washers from each. (See Figure 201, 202, 203, or 204.)

NOTE: 250–C30P, –C30M, –C30G/2 engines have only one igniter lead and ignition
exciter.

B. Installation

(1) Install serviceable exciters on the gearbox. Retain each with three bolts and washers:
tighten to 30–40 lb in. (3.9–4.5 N.m).

(2) Install the start counter black lead and the electrical harness lead onto the input stud. Re-
tain with one washer and one nut. Tighten nut to 8–12 lb in. (0.9–1.4 N.m).

(3) Connect the ignitor lead to the ignition exciter. Tighten the coupling nut to 50–70 lb in.
(5.6–7.9 N.m).

NOTE: 250–C30P, –C30M, –C30G/2 engines have only one igniter lead and ignition
exciter.

2. Inspection/Check

A. Apply 28 volts dc to the input terminal of the ignition exciter using a minimum wire size of 16 gage
(1.295 mm). Observe firing. If a repetitive spark rate of less than 6 sparks per second is ob-
served, replace the ignition exciter.

B. Apply 14 volts dc to the input of the ignition exciter if there is any question about its operation.
The spark rate should not be less than three sparks per second and should be uniform. Replace
the exciter if a uniform three sparks per second rate is not obtained.
