those of the other members. The team is unlike previous assignments for her
because of the amount of decision making that the team is collectively allowed to

A basic distinction between strategic leadership and strategic management is

that strategic management envisions where the organization would like to be in
five to ten years while strategic leadership focuses on how to achieve the vision

A company pursuing a strategy of differentiation through innovation in a

bureaucratic, hierarchical organizational structure is an example of a mismatch
between strategy and structure

When a proposed change threatens a person’s values, it ignites powerful feelings

that fuel resistance to change.

Having read the case, I think Mark Parker has been very successful in
implementing the strategies for the big organization such Nike is. He has been
very good at anticipating and forecasting the events of the external environment
such as analyzing the biggest rival such as Adidas and implement a strategy that
outperformed the rival. Moreover, he managed to analyze the company’s core
competencies and to select the appropriate audience or market segment. He has
always maintained that all Nike employees work for one boss—the consumer and
for him understanding an athlete’s wants and needs were one of the important
things to stipulate. As a successful strategist he was very good at systematically
making the changes and strategic adjustments, all the time he encouraged
innovations and new designs for the shoes. As a successful strategist he all the
time oversaw the vision, mission and core values of the company. Nike’s mission
was to bring inspiration and innovation to every athlete in the world and
according to its mission Mark realized that understanding an athlete’s wants and
needs were one of the important things to stipulate. He made strategical steps
like making a coalition with apple and creating a wireless system.

B. I think SWOT analysis played a big role in this case, for the organizational
success Mark Parker realized internal and external factors, for example, culture of
the organization, such as trust and respect through the employees, teamwork
and recognition of their effort, Moreover he realized that nowadays customers
play the biggest role to be profitable, that’s why he changed the company from
product-based structure to a customer-driven structure to satisfy all customers’
wants and needs and maintain customer loyalty, also also removed regional
middle management, and handled a rare round of layoffs. The company very well
realized the core competencies, such as commitment to innovations changes in
designs.

Mark paid attention on external environment too, he analyzed the competitor’s

market such as Adidas and also realized that there might me threat when Adidas
acquired Reebok and implement such strategy that made the brand more
successful rather than the rival, moreover he took the opportunity of entering
new markets like China or Japan.

C. For me, Mark Parker is a demanding leader, he all the time thought of
implementing changes, making systematic adjustments, even he removed
regional middle management, and handled a rare round of layoffs because he
thought this might be good for the organizational structure. For me he is also a
brand innovator, his effort was to make the brand all the time different from the
rivals and appealing for the consumers. Also I think he is a charismatic leader,
because he all the time made changes from the status quo and moreover he had
the ability to formulate vision for the company.
