MINISTRY OF EDUCATION
__________________________________________________________________________________________
The Ministry of Education seeks to ensure that our learners are safe and meaningfully occupied during the
COVID-19 Pandemic period. We understand that this is uncharted territory and that you may become frustrated
while attempting to adapt to the new lifestyle of social and physical distancing and all that comes with it. We
encourage you to follow all the precautionary measures issued by the Ministry of Public Health.
Our learners are and will continue to be at home indefinitely during this Pandemic and we are aware that you
are concerned about your child’s academic Life and the continuation of his/her educational journey. During this
period much emphasis should be placed on helping our learners. In the best interest of your child, you are
encouraged to work closely with his/her teacher.
The Ministry of Education has and will continue to chart a course to provide our learners with access to
continuous learning. To chart this course, we have initiated several plans as listed below.
- The distribution of Grades 2, 4 and 6 Assessment papers to all schools across the country.
- The distribution of learning packages for the Grades 1, 3 and 5 learners across the country. These packages
include practice papers on content and skills covered in the four core subject areas within the respective
grades and will be available during the first week of May at your school. Learners are expected to complete
each practice paper while you may give additional practice exercises.
- Workbooks will be issued to the Grades One, Three and Five learners. You are encouraged to spend time
with your child/children to explain the instructions that are in the workbooks and on the practice papers.
Please remember to be patient and supportive bearing in mind that this home-based teaching/learning
arrangement may be new to both of you. When in doubt, teachers should be contacted for guidance. Our
teachers who will continue to communicate with you and learners via the internet will be more than willing to
give guidance. For those children who have access to the internet, you are encouraged to visit recommended
websites for additional support. We encourage you to continue to communicate with your child’s teacher.
You are reminded that learning can take place anywhere and at any time. While at home during the Pandemic
you can:
use this period to teach social graces, respect for self and other, social etiquette, table manners and
how to care for body parts.
find time to bond with your children and help the family to relax and communicate.
teach skill sets they will not be taught at school.
teach children anger management and how to deal with stress.
introduce your child/children to the concept of sustainability.
sing songs with your child/children, encourage them to compose songs and participate in a singing
competition.
encourage your child/children to do art work using materials from within the home or the environment.
conduct tree planting exercises or gardening with your child/children.
encourage your child/children to create games.
have your child/children conduct experiments under your supervision.
1
plan with the family what every activity will be: Schedule activities for each person and give a topic for
the day which will be discussed as a family.
Remember do encourage your child/children to have a “growth mindset”. We will all be stronger and more
committed by putting education first when we come out on the other side of the COVID-19 Pandemic.
For more information and access to additional resources to support your child please continue to use the
Ministry of Education website (education.gov.gy) and our Facebook and Instagram pages. Also, stay tuned to
the Guyana Learning Channel and the local radio/television stations.
Regards,
