Pieter Wessels a young South African, living in Kimberley began to keep the Sabbath. He
came to the conclusion from Bible Study, that the 7th day was the Sabbath. He thought that he
was the only person in the world keeping the Sabbath-commandment. A month later G.J.
VAN DRUTEN visited him and told him of the miner from U.S.A named WILLIAM HUNT
who was S.D.A. Hunt told Wessels about the S.D.A group in America. Eager to know more
Bible truth, Wessels and Van Druten appealed to the G.C for a Dutch minister to come and
teach them more fully and baptize them. They sent money to assist in the expense of sending
a missionary to South Africa. This was the 1886 “Macedonian call” from South Africa. In
response to this call the G.C sent Elder D.A. Robinson and C.L. Boyd with their wives,
colporteurs and Bible instructors. They landed at the cape in July 1887 (sailed on May 17,
1887). A month later the movement began to spread.
In 1893 Claremont Union College was opened to be the first S.D.A College outside North
America. Today it is called HELDERBERG COLLEGE IN CAPE TOWN.
In 1894, Pieter Wessels and other requested for a piece of land in Southern Rhodesia and
Cecil Rhodes prime minister of the cape colony and chairman of the B.S.A co, instructed Dr.
L.S. JAMESON the administrator in Bulawayo to permit S.D.A representatives to select
whatever land they needed.
In 1895 they opened Matebele Mission which was renamed a few years later as Solusi after a
local chief who had his Kraal nearby and who had assisted in the establishment of the early
mission. It was the first S.D.A mission work for Non-Christian People. This new mission was
headed by G.B. Tripp (he supretendented) other workers were Dr. A.S. CARMICHEAL and
W.H. ANDERSON.
NOTE: In 1916; the first M.V (A.Y) in Africa was introduced at Solusi and in 1959; the first
Pathfinder Club in Africa- Zimbabwe was established.
In 1903 using Solusi station as base, W.H. ANDERSON, PHILIP MALOMO, JACOB
DETCHA and others set out for Zambia. Chief Monze granted them a plot. In 1905, they
opened a mission station called PEMBA MISSION STATION, but in 1913 the name was
changed to RUSANGU MISSION STATION.
From Rusangu work spread over a large portion in south where the main language used was
Tonga.

In 1917, MUSOFU MISSION STATION was opened by S.M. Konigmacher, it is not
far from Ndola Town.
In 1921, CHIPEMPE MISSION STATION was opened in the North East in the region
of the Mweru and Bangweulu Lakes.
In 1925, MWAMI MISSION STATION was opened in Chipata Eastern Province of
Zambia and 2 years later a hospital called MWAMI HOSPITAL was opened, in 1927.
In 1955, another hospital was opened in the Western Province of Zambia called Yuka
Hospital in Kalabo District. Many mission stations were hospitals opened in different
parts of Northern Rhodesia.
As Zambia Union Conference (z.b.u.c), we came from a field status that was set up in 1921
with V.J. WILSON as first president, the HQ were in Lusaka. During two (2) periods, two
(2) sections of Zambia functioned as separate fields; the area surrounding Chipempe Mission
in the current Luapula Zambia Field (1926- 1942) and West Province (1946- 1958)
In 1929, the European and colored constituency of Zambia became part of Rhodesia-
Bechuanaland Conference. In 1946, Western Province was organized as a field. In 1958,
because of improved communication it was once more made part of Zambia field.
Zambia was divided into two (2) section areas: Liumba Hill and Sitoli in Western Province,
each with eight (8) - grade boarding schools. There was also four (4) - grade out schools
numbering four (4), 11 organized churches, 23 companies and a number of branch Sabbath
Schools. In 1945, the HQ of the Zambia Field was moved to Chisekesi- Monze close to
Rusangu Mission Station. Zambia East of the meridian 32 remained parts of Nyasaland
(Malawi).

Riverside has also a Lifestyle Centre which is called Riverview Wellness Centre which offers
the benefits of natural treatment of most lifestyle related diseases. These include Immune
system revitalization programs, the treatment of Diabetes, high blood pressure etc.
Rusangu University trace its historical roots in the missionary endeavour of an American
Missionary named William Harry Anderson who until 1903 was the Principal of Solusi
Mission in Zimbabwe. He crossed over into Zambia in the company of several African
Adventist workers namely: Jacob Detcha, Philip Malomo, Jack Mahlatini Mpofu and
Andrew Nyakana and established Rusangu Mission in 1905.
He began work at Rusangu by establishing a school system which has since seen the
current presence of church owned primary and secondary school and a university on the
mission land.
In 1975 Rusangu Ministerial School was opened to provide pastoral training. It was the sole
institution in the country that provided ministerial training to most of the pastors serving the
Zambian Adventist Territory. It later had its name changed to Zambia Adventist Seminary to
broaden the scope for theological training that was being offered. In December 1993, a
decision was made to relocate it to Musofu in Chief Chitina’s area in Mkushi. However in
1994, the institution was closed so as to have adequate time to plan for its re-organization
and upgrading.
In 1997, the institution’s name was again changed to Zambia Adventist College due to its
intended mission of incorporating other academic and professional disciplines. In 200, the
college re-opened and began to run in service Theological Programs at Riverside Farm
Institute in Kafue in collaboration with Solusi University (Z.A.U). and it became Licensed
and registered as a private University by the Government on Zambia in 2005. In December
2011, the name Zambia Adventist University was changed to Rusangu University and this
name has come to stay.
Rusangu University has 5 schools namely: School of Business, School of Education, School
of Humanities and Sciences, School of Science and Technology and School of Theology.
Rusangu has a new academic building which was officially opened by his Excellency the
President of the Republic of Zambia Mr. Michael Chilufya Sata through the minister of
12
Daniel M. Sicheka 2016
Education Dr. John Phiri on 13th march 2012. Rusangu University is now ranked among the
top 5 universities in Zambia.
HISTORY OF S.I.D
In 1919, African Division was organized and W.H. Branson was named president. This
comprised Southern and Eastern Africa. Later it changed to Southern Africa Division and
Elder Robert H. Pierson was elected president. This division included also countries in the
Central of Africa. The HQ was moved from Cape Town to Harare, Zimbabwe. In 1968, a
Trans- Africa Division was formed. In 1983 there were 2 divisions: Trans- Africa (T.A.D)
and Eastern Africa (E.A.D). E.A.D covered countries like Tanzania, Malawi, Kenya,
Uganda, Somalia, Djibouti and Ethiopia, and their first black president was Elder Bekele
Heye. T.A.D covered South Africa, Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and
Zimbabwe. Elder Kenneth Mitteider was president.
In 1983 both divisions were merged forming a new division with the name EASTERN
AFRICA DIVISION with its HQ in Harare, Zimbabwe. The new division started its
operations in 1984, 1st January.
Pastor Bekele Heye (late) who had been president of the old E.A.D was elected president of
the new E.D.A; the second president was Dr. Lassew D. Raelly 1991- 2000. Dr. Pardon
Mwansa, the third and last president of E.A.D (2000- 2003) until the time it changed to S.I.D
in 2003 and he became the first president of S.I.D (2003- 2005). The new E.A.D consisted of
countries like Botswana, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya and Malawi. Somalia, Tanzania,
Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe, South Africa remained as a conference administrated
directly from the G.C because of political tensions (internal problems) in the country at the
time.
In 2003 a total restricting of most of Africa brought in the new divisions like East-
Central Africa and Southern Africa- Indian Ocean Division, e.t.c.
a. East- Central Africa Division (E.C.D) includes countries like Ethiopia, Djibouti,
Somalia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya, Rwanda, Burundi and D.R of Congo.
13
Daniel M. Sicheka 2016
b. S.I.D includes countries like Angola, Botswana, Lesotho, Mozambique, Comoros,
Madagascar, Seychelles, Mauritius, Reunion, St. Helena, with other small Islands of
the South Atlantic and South Indian Oceans, Swaziland, Namibia, South Africa,
Zambia and Zimbabwe.
S.I.D organized from E.A.D in 2003. The HQ of S.I.D was transferred from Harare,

WORLD DIVISIONS
There are 13 Divisions in the S.D.A Church. The reason to have Divisions in the church is to
make the work easy. Divisions were organized as early as 1916. Since that time there have
been various restructurings of these entities as new countries emerged and new political
situations made cause for changes.
15
Daniel M. Sicheka 2016
Bermuda, the French possession of St. Pierre and Miquelon, the United States of
America, Johnson Island and all other Islands of the Pacific. This division is divided into
9 Unions.
The President, Secretary, Treasurer, three (3) Vice Presidents and Department Directors
who oversee the work of the Division. The three (3) top officers also serve as associates
in the G.C. No other division has this arrangement.
13. INTER- AMERICAN DIVISION (I.A.D) it is the only Division with its HQ outside of
the Division territory (Minami Florida). Countries like North America from Mexico
(Costa Rico) to Panama the South American countries of Colombia, Venezuela and three
(3) “Guiana’s” and the Caribbean Islands (Tobago, Trinidad, Jamaica and Haiti, Virgin
Islands e.t.c.) Membership is the lowest if all Divisions in ratio 1:13, in Spite high
population densities. It is the largest Division.

MAGAZINES
A Missionary is a person who takes the work of the God to another Country. A Pioneer
worker is one who opens a Mission Station and stays there to develop it.
NOTE:
Fulton went to Fiji in 1896. There he printed a monthly magazine called RAMARA
meaning “Light”. He stayed there for 10 years. For this reason he has been called the
Adventist Apostle in Fiji. Today Fulton College is named after him.
G.F. Jones a sea Captain- was converted by picking up a copy of an Adventist Magazine
he found on the deck of his ship.
John Tray in the dark South Pacific Islands work began with a desire by Tay to visit
Pitcairn Island in 1886. His work on the Island was rewarded when all the people living
there decide to be S.D.A. In 1890, a mission ship called the “Pitcairn” was built with the
first Sabbath School Offering and sailed fir Pitcairn.
Michael B. Czechowski a converted Catholic Priest, had travelled out on his own under
self sponsorship as unofficial missionary in Italy. He started a small company of Sabbath-
Keepers in the Waldensian Valley at Torre Peilice.
Abram La Rue went to Hong Kong as a self supporting colporteur. He was a humble man
who worked alone until help arrived 14 years later.
