What This Module is About

At this moment, you are now wired to upkeep the environment. Becoming mindful to
work for nature’s sake is a fulfilling role that helps to eradicate community problems.
Certainly, it offers a lot of meaningful ways which absolutely promote life and restore health.
Such that, elders could do tree planting, learners would have clean-up drive, others may
initiate a beach clearing, while residents may sort to recycling or waste reduction, and a lot
more. Among them, which would you prefer as means to realize an environmental project?
How about gardening from you backyards? Like planting in pots and recycled containers on
terraces, or in an area near after the doorsteps? Wouldn’t you go for a home living amid
attractive surrounding?
In this pandemic times, the situation still calls to refrain us to go out unnecessarily
from homes. So then, a garden to keep like vegetables, herbs, or ornamental plants could be
the best among other environmental project to get into. Since it doesn’t require us to do
social contact with others. Planting in pots and layering them is quiet sensible for everyone
to start. So why not try to cultivate a soil? Isn’t it a better environmental plan for the pursuit of
community health?
Planting in the backyards is merely not new to other household Filipinos. Since
several of us has gone extra mile when it comes to food gardening. Our government has
also initiated programs to advocate this as a productive practice and an admirable
environmental activity that one can do. One government agency is very visible on its
distribution of vegetable seeds to walk-in clients who want to engage in vegetable gardening.
Let us now venture a few steps to experience more of breeze, shade from leaves,
gather lovely flowers, and mostly, harvest some herbs, vegies, or crops right in our
backyards. Bring your patience to flower beds and seedlings to care for. For this could not
only help you provide some much-needed relief from stress, but it could help you and
your parents to skip the trip to the market once the produce comes in. This will not only
provide source of food for the family, but also open for extra income opportunities.

What I Need to Know

As a learner, you possess a crucial role to the environment. Your cooperation will

smile on his recycled pot as he read the words labelled on a tape in front. What are
the words is he pondering at?

Expose the message through the code below. Write the message on the

Processing Questions:
1. What do you think the message tell us? Explain your answer.
2. Why did a gardener took a big smile reading the message?
3. Do you think he consider environmental health on his planting?

Let us read! √ Staying mindful about environmental impact!

A sustainable garden works with its surrounding nature to contribute to a thriving

ecosystem. It is not harmful to the environment nor depletes natural resources. Thus,
maintaining it support long-term ecological balance.

Growing a sustainable garden is all about learning along the way. Some plants may suffer
from insect damage, and some sustainable practices may take a little more thought and
effort. However, the reward is worth the work. Soon, gardeners like you are encourage to
strive, to give back to the Earth and find ways to live in harmony with nature.

Significant factors in Gardening towards Environmental Health

Composting The most important sustainable gardening practice as it has the greatest
impact. At its root, composting is a form of recycling that not only benefits soil health, but the
health of the humans who take part in it. Composting yard and garden wastes means less
material going to the landfill and more organic material for the soil, which makes for a
healthier, heartier harvest.

Watering Plants It's crucial to be smart when it comes to watering plants-- do so only
when they really need it. Consider sprinklers or hoses that they don't run off in the street or
walkways. Part of sustainable gardening means choosing water wise plants; orange
daylilies, china roses, and succulents don't need a lot of water. You can also collect water
from rain instead from faucet to conserve water loss.

Plant Selection When choosing plants, it's important to diversify your garden in order
to repel pests and diseases and promote biodiversity. Devoting part of the garden to native
plants will especially benefit birds and other animals.
Biodiversity - the variation of life on Earth, is a major factor in its resilience. It
means that in a bio-diverse ecosystem, if the environment changes and some
organisms can no longer thrive, others can take their place and fulfil essential
functions.

When Home Gardening is maintained and done accordingly, it

has numerous contribution to the environment and community.
Makes the soil healthy and prevent soil erosion
Waste reduction
Abundant trees and greeneries through an increase number of
plants in the community
Conserve water loss
Fresh and purified air as it increases oxygen

Plant production
Ensures environment safety to children and other family members
Clean and safe surroundings
Food security
Beautiful and clean yard
