The Department of Mathematics, VES College
of Arts, Science and Commerce proposes to
hold a day long conference
„Mathemight‟ with the theme “Surprises
in Mathematics and their
Applications” on the 19th of January 2011.
In view of the shift in the objectives
of Higher Education from knowledge based
education to skill based education we
want to
Motivate the students of Mathematics
to look deeper into the applications of
Mathematics.
Sensitize the students of Mathematics
to the.research potential of these
applications.
We plan to have the following three
major events.
1. Paper presentation
Every topic in mathematics offers
abundance of surprises to students at
every stage of learning. This gives
immense pleasure to Mathematics
students. Researching for application of
the surprises will sensitize the students
towards vast potential of these fields.
With this conviction we invite papers to
be presented on
“Surprises in Mathematics and their
Applications”.
from students of B.Sc / B.A or M.Sc.with
following specifications :
Each paper should depict the
surprise element
& application.
Each presentation will be for maximum of
15 minutes.
Each paper should involve two students
(P.G. or U.G.)
Each paper must be presented by both
researching students within the
stipulated time of 15 minutes.
2. treasure hunt
Teams of 2 are invited for an exciting
mathematical treasure hunt. The
treasure being not as abstract as maths
itself. The paths for the team to tread
shall not all be convex forcing them to
move out of their zones to find the
treasure. We promise a non-trivial
journey.
3. Poster Competition
A poster competition will be conducted
during the conference. Research posters
are invited on the theme: “Surprises in
Mathematics and their
Applications”.

If required, photocopies of the
registration form can be used.
Participation should be informed by
filling up the attached registration form
and mailing it to the college address.
