blues com o branco country and western.
passado.
ficando bem diferente do original. De lá pra cá, nasceram o rock progressivo, o
hard rock, o glam rock, o punk, o emocore, o heavy metal, o gothic metal, o

A concert held by the group "Guns N' Roses" (July 2, 1991 in St Louis,
Missouri) ended when the enraged mob of 2500 youths staged a riot, resulting
in 60 of their numbers being injured. The journal Rolling Stone informed that the
participants in this concert, "developed into a furious uncontrollable mob, hurling
bottles, destroying seats, ripping apart bushes, breaking and setting fire to
instruments... This riot continued for over an hour before a squad of special
police arrived to restore order. (Rolling Stone, Aug. 22, 1975 p 15).

“Sex, Drugs and Rock ‘n’ Roll”. Você sabe como surgiu essa expressão?
Sex and Drugs and Rock and Roll" is a song by Ian Dury, it was originally
released on the 1977 and it was sold only around 19,000 copies (a small
amount for a single in 1977) but won critical acclaim. Released as it was in the
height of the Punk rock scandal the song was misinterpreted (as it is often is to
this day) as a song about excess as its title and chorus would suggest and was
banned by the BBC. However, Dury maintained that the song was not a punk
anthem. He said he was trying to suggest that there was more to life than sex,
drugs, rock 'n' roll or a 9-to-5 existence.
The phrase has since become a part of the English language. It employs the
rhetorical figure of a triad to capture a certain lifestyle.

Pair work.
Think about positive and negative aspects of the song. Make two lists. Then
compare with the others.
“Music is central to youth culture. At an adolescent party, the key question is not
what you do but what music you listen to. On average, American youth listen to
music and watch music videos four to five hours a day, which is more time than
they spend with their friends outside of school or watching television. Music
matters to adolescents, and they cannot be understood without a serious
consideration of how it fits into their lives. Music alters and intensifies their
moods, furnishes much of their slang, dominates their conversations and
provides the ambiance at their social gatherings. Music styles define the crowds
and cliques they run in. Music personalities provide models for how they act and
dress. ”
The book offers some comfort to parents and others who are worried about
graphic sex, morbid violence, overt racism and challenges to authority in
popular music lyrics and videos. Music doesn't appear to have massive
negative effects, the authors say. But it does seem to be dangerous for some
youth, and to ignore its effects on a subset of young people "makes no more
sense than to ignore the causes of homicide because only a tiny minority ever
commits murder."

Which of these statements do you agree with? Think about and then share your
answers with the class.

One study revealed that of the 700 most popular songs of "heavy metal," 50%
speak of killings, 35% of Satanism and 7% about suicide. Sheila Davis,
professor of lyric writing at New York University, is convinced that "better give
serious attention to the content of pop songs and to evaluate not only what
lyrics are saying to society but, more important, what they may be doing to it"
(USA Today, October 11, 1985, p. 10).
Bring to the class to show your mates. What about make posters with these
songs separating them according to their theme and show them to the school?

"Kids are exposed to these sorts of messages not just in music but in culture in
general," says Steven Martino, a RAND psychologist and lead researcher on
the study. "It's better to have them be critical thinkers than have them just be
sheltered teens."
Parents and psychologists have long worried about the harm not only of music,
but also of TV, movies, and video games. Michael Rich, director of the Center
on Media and Child Health at Harvard University, says: "We as a society have
lulled ourselves into thinking that if it's entertainment it doesn't affect us. There's
this artificial dichotomy we've drawn between education and entertainment -
education is at school, and then kids turn their brains off when they go home
and listen to misogynistic lyrics". Parents should be aware of what their kids are
listening to and willing to have conversations that put it in context.
