Q-7 a) There are very few companies that exist and grow in the retail
business with the
primary goal of funding environmental pro.grams. Paiagonia is one
of those exceptions.
Its culture, including everything from daily business iecisions to #i;g, i,
based upon Patagonia's commitment io its environmental, moral,
"mprov*;
'ethical, and
philosophical causes.,_Thus, many workers with similar work and p"r.on"i lifr;lr;,
the company in and effort to further these socially responsible efforts. Jr;;
This strong inspiration is evident through the cornpany at all levels and began early
on, As the company evolved, its owners asked employees to help draft a statement of
purpose and core values. The."Statement of Purpose" reads: "Patagonia exists to use
business to inspire and implement, solution to the environmental' crisis. Employees on
product line teams have business-environmental goals, for example, to reduce the
environmental impact of their products. As you can imagine, the organizations walks a
precarious line between social responsibility and profits.
The company's twofold focus on quality and envirorlm€Dtal issues has propelled
Patagonia toward innovation. The revolutionary products developed and offered in
outdoor gear have earned Patagonia a lo;ral customer base. ln acidition, building clothes
that last longer and work better has supported its environmental efforts.
So how does the company ensure that employees adopt and maintain the same
attitude and passion for its environmental prograrns? Maybe it is because Patagonia
devotes one full morning of its three-day new-hire orientation to a voluntary surfing
lesson or there is the conference that teaches organizational and marketing skills to
gt?ss:t'oots environme.ntal activists, which sorne Patagonia ernployees attend. ln
addition, a civil disobedience training ccurse is available to anyone interested; and the
company even posts bail for workers who utilize that training in actions conslstent with
Patagonia's eore vaiuesi Empioyees may also apply to take up to two months' sabbatical
to work as full-time volunteers for nonprofit environmental groups; or receive a $ 2000
reimbursement from the company for purchasing a hybrid electric vehicle.
Many empioyees join Patagonia and bring their own enthusiasm However, to quote
the company website: "Our product-tester spends days in the back and front country of
Colorado beating up new gear. One of our retail stores is managed by a world-class
suffers...an employee in Reno lobbies state and federal officials on behalf of the
environment ... ..The fellow who answers the phone is an 1 1 time world champion frisbee
player". Most of Patagonials employees come to the company with their own
extracurricular hobbies and interests; and combining those lifestyles and values
enhances the company's culture
After being named one of America's top companies to work for by Fortune for many
years, Patagonia's reputation is such that it has to spend very little on recruiting.
Between its formal environrnental program and the steady labor pool of like-minded
workers, employee motivation is all but inevitable.
a) What are some of the programs or benefits that Patagonia provides its employees
that may motivate them? Which ones would be effective motivators for you?
b) Discuss the advantages a company may gain from offering sabbaticals and similar
options. Why may some companies be reluctant to participate in such practices?
c) As an employee, which is more important to you, your pay or other benefits? Why?
