Tie-Dye
Tie-Dye, like Batik, is a resist technique. But instead of using wax to prevent dye
from entering certain areas, the cloth is "bound" - tied or knotted or partially covered.
Different ties, knots or covers produce different patterns of blockage, which the dye
transforms into permanent designs on the cloth. The fabric can be knotted or folded
or gathered into bunches before tying. You can tie around objects - a brick, say, or a
rubber ball. Use a pipette to place concentrated dye down into creases for strong
accents, or a syringe to work from the inside out. Use clamps or clothespins or
removable lines of stitching for special effects. Roll or fan-fold the entire piece, from
the top, from the side, in a spiral.
DYE LIQUOR
Dissolve ¼ cup urea in 1 pint of water. Use this solution to mix dye liquor: ½ to 2
teaspoons dye per ¼ cup of urea-water (Up to 8 colors—use separate jars). For
more intense colors try increasing soda and urea first; then try more dye.
SODA SOAK
Pre-wash cloth, in warm soapy water, to remove sizing. Dissolve 1 cup of Soda in
2½ gallons of Water. Pre-soak your cloth for 15 minutes in this soda-water solution.
Be careful: soda-water is alkaline enough to burn your hands.
TIEING
Remove cloth from soda-water and apply ties while cloth is still wet. Non-conductive
ties work best (undyable, impervious stuff: rubber bands, waxed-cord, plastic wrap).
APPLICATION
Apply dye directly onto cloth. Use a pipet, syringe, brush, squeeze bottle, spray-
bottle, spoon. Wear rubber gloves.
REACTION
Let work stand covered, so that it doesn't dry out, for at least six hours (really) —
over-night is better. This is the time the dye bonds to the fiber.
HEAT SETTING
Undo ties, rinse well, then wash cloth in very hot soapy water (boiling is good or
steaming or baking).Rinse until water runs clear.
1. Fold and/or tie the fabric 2. Wear your dust mask and 3. Using your dust mask and
dissolve 1 cup (8 oz.) of per
into the desired gloves, combine water with all
gallon of warm water. Soak the
patterns. The designs will tied garments about 5-15 minutes chemicals except dye. Add liquid
be more defined if you wet (until saturated). Reuse solution to dye gradually, pasting up to
the shirt and squeeze or until gone. Squeeze out excess avoid lumps. Apply dye with
spin out excess water so garment is just damp, not squeeze bottles, paint brushes,
before folding. dripping. sponges, etc., as many colors as
you want. Easiest to use a funnel
to pour dissolved dye into
squeeze bottles.

Dye Formula:

 8 oz. cup of warm water

 2 to 8 teaspoons of

(Colors with no * = 2 teaspoons)
(One * = 4 teaspoons)
(Two ** = 8 teaspoons)

 1 tablespoon
(dissolve in hot water first).

 1/4 teaspoon
(if needed)

4. Put fabric (still tied) in a 5. Remove from bag and while

plastic bag (the idea is to still tied, rinse off the excess dye
keep it wet and chemically under cold running water (faucet,
active - any method of hose or shower), then rinse in
keeping it wet is O.K.) and warmer water while you untie and
let sit for at least 4 hours after garments are untied, until
but preferably 24 hours to water runs fairly clear. Have your
"cure". Shorter times work washing machine pre-filled with
better in summer, and HOT water with or and throw in
longer times are needed the clothing as soon as it is
when it is cold. rinsed, running it through a full
cycle.

Tie dying is really a simple process:

1)First, wash and spin out the white item to be dyed (make sure it's a natural
fiber product like 100% cotton, hemp or rayon. Not polyester).

2)Next, soak it in a soda ash solution for 30 minutes or until fully saturated (1
cup to 1 gallon water). Then, ring out excess chemical water or turn the water off on
your washing maching and spin out excess soda ash water.

3)Tie it up any way you like using rubber bands, string, etc. (design ideas can
be found in tie dye books, DVD's and on the internet) Then dye it with Procion MX
dyes (info on mixing dye and the ratio of how much dye to water is available on the
Dharma Trading web site)

4)Once item is saturated with dye wrap in plastic or set on table to cure for 24
hours (make sure it stays wet so the dye can react to the fabric).

5)Unwrap, rinse in cold water and wash in Synthrapol soap 3 times to remove
excess dye. Dry in a dryer or hang to dry.

Spiral Tie Dye

The origins of the art of tie dye cab be traced back to Peru where the style of
fabric enhancement emerged in the 5th century AD. The African continent, Japan,
and India are other regions where tie dye techniques have been used for many
centuries now. This art became popular in the United States and the rest of the
western world only in the 1960s with the hippies making it the must-have clothing
item in their wardrobe. Today tie dye is often looked at as a fun, weekend activity to
keep children occupied. There are many patterns that you can create using tie dye.
One of the most popular tie dye designs is the spiral. In this article we give you some
spiral tie dye instructions.

How to Spiral Tie Dye

If you have always been inspired by this staple of hippie fashion, then you will
definitely want to know what spiral tie dye instructions you need to follow in order to
create a piece of clothing that has spiral tie dye patterns. Spiral tie dyeing is
extremely easy, as long as you know what the correct spiral tie dye instructions are.
In case you want to make a spiral tie dye

T-shirt, then you will need to following things.

•White T-shirt (cotton)

•Squirt bottle

•Soda ash

•Rubber bands

•Latex gloves

•Fabric dyes

•Water

•Plastic cling film.

Once you have everything you need, in order to make spiral tie dye shirts, you
can follow the easy spiral tie dye instructions to make this easy design. The first
challenge that you will face will be to tie the fabric properly. In order to do so first
place the fabric or T-shirt on a table and flatten it properly. Now decide where you
want the center of your spiral design to be and pinch the cloth there. Now you have
to keep twisting the cloth till the entire fabric is completely twisted and takes on the
shape of a flat disk or a pancake. The thickness of the cloth in this shape should not
be more than two inches. Now take the rubber bands that you have and put it around
the fabric or T-shirt to keep the structure in place. The next step will be to dye the
fabric according to the spiral tie dye instructions given. This will allow you to create
tie dye patterns that you have always wanted to.

While dyeing the fabric, the first thing you will need to do is to create a
solution using soda ash. The proportions for the same are 8 ounces of soda ash for
every gallon of water. Next you will need to soak the fabric in the solution for ten to
fifteen minutes. Take the fabric out and squeeze out the solution. Now wear the latex
gloves that you have before using the dye and following the spiral tie dye
instructions. Prepare the dye according to the instructions provided with the guide.
Fill the squirt bottle with the dye and then apply it on the fabric. You can apply the
dye as you like, using a different color for different sections or using one of the tie
dye designs that creates a spiral tie dye with one color. While applying different
colors try and stick to the order of the rainbow. This will make the blending of colors
appear more natural. Avoid placing colors like purple and yellow together if you want
to avoid seeping of colors.

Once you have applied the colors, wrap the fabric in a plastic cling film and allow it to
rest for at least twenty four hours. This is very important. After a day, remove the
fabric bag and rinse it in salt water. This will remove all excess dye from the fabric.
Squeeze the water out and let it dry in a shaded area. If you have always wanted to
learn how to tie dye shirts, then these spiral tie dye instructions can help you make
the T-shirt you have always wanted to. Experimenting with the different tying
techniques will allow you to create double spiral tie dye patterns as well.
