You will have the option to earn honors for each term of this course. The purpose of this option is to allow
for those students who desire to explore chemistry in more depth and breadth than the average student.
You will have some choice in what you will learn, but regardless of your choice, you will need to share
your deeper understandings with your peers and the chemistry instructors at various times in the process.
Below are the basic guidelines for honors in this course. More detail will be provided as the first quarter
of the course progresses and you have an opportunity to reflect on this possibility.
Honors Guidelines
1. Students who want to pursue Honors are expected to communicate with the instructor and
successfully complete Honors work during the first grading period of the course.
2. First grading period grades and performance will be used to assess whether students will be
allowed to pursue Honors. Students with a composite grade of A or A- may pursue Honors;
students with a composite grade of B+ or B may pursue Honors at the instructor's discretion.
Students with a composite grade of B- or below will not be allowed to pursue honors in a course.
3. Students in the Honors process will keep a portfolio of their work. The portfolio will reflect the
department’s definition of scientific literacy and will include work that reflects an outstanding
understanding of problem solving, global connections, scientific inquiry, and concepts central to
the discipline.
4. In chemistry, students will choose three experiences per grading period, making sure that each
piece of the definition of scientific literacy is represented.
5. At the end of each term, Honors portfolios will be reviewed by a panel of science instructors who
will base their judgment on a common science department Honors rubric.
6. Students must receive a minimum grade of B for the term in order to earn Honors and continue
pursuing Honors in the following term of the course.
7. Once students have committed to pursuing Honors, they are expected to honor that commitment.
Students will not be able to enter and exit Honors on impulse; they may choose to pursue or
withdraw from Honors only at the beginning of a grading period, and the decision will be based
upon the work done in the previous grading period. Students who stop successfully completing
Honors work will not earn Honors for the term.
8. All grades for the course are based on the standard work in the course. Honors work does not
count toward the composite grade but instead the Honors designation in the course.
