A. Product Description

1. Overview

The WDC Power Regulator System is a true electronic regulator that is designed specifically
for protecting sensitive electronic equipment. Our low impedance transformer and high
capacity inverter maintains power to the crucial peak demands of a wide range of electronics
systems. The WDC Power Regulator System features noise suppression, voltage regulation,
and frequency stabilization. The WDC Power Regulator System will also accept and provide
a variety of universal voltages and frequencies with ease.

The WDC Power Regulator System is designed for medical equipment applications. The
electrical and mechanical connections have been designed to withstand extreme vibration
without system degradation. Also, the electrical topology incorporates minimum components
to ensure low system weight.

2. Features

2a. Protects against Power Spikes, Surges, Sags and Brownouts

2b. Superior Voltage Regulation

2c. Accepts Universal Voltages and Frequencies:

The WDC Power Regulator System is designed to accept both U.S. and European voltages
and frequencies. The unit can be powered by 400 Vac @ 50 Hz or 480 Vac @ 60 Hz. The
WDC Power Regulator System can also provide either 400 Vac @ 50 Hz or 48O Vac @
60Hz. The voltage and frequency selection is achieved on site with minimal hardware
changes.

2d. High Current Capacity:

The WDC Power Regulator System can provide an extremely high amount of surge current to
demanding electronic equipment. The WDC Power Regulator System is designed with a
unique high inrush inverter that will supply currents many times the nominal regulator
capacity. Therefore, the WDC Power Regulator System does not have to be oversized to
meet the high inrush currents of most abnormal load requirements. The WDC Power
Regulator System overload rating is higher in both magnitude and duration than a typical
Power Regulator System. This ensures that the electronic equipment is fully power isolated /
protected during all phases of customer equipment operation.

2e. Over Voltage Protection:

The WDC Power Regulator System is equipped with several protection circuits and
components to ensure personal safety and meet required agency standards. In addition to
the normal protection.

Page 3
WDC POWER REGULATOR

circuits, a quick responding over/under voltage protection circuit has been designed to protect
the imaging system. The circuitry is set to +/- 10% of nominal but can be reprogrammed to
the customer's needs..

2f. Small Size with a Low Component Count

2g. Low Impedance Magnetics:

The WDC Power Regulator is engineered with a low impedance main transformer. The
impedance is rated at 1.8% or less, which is well below the typical isolation transformer value
of 3.5% to 5%. The WDC Power Regulator transformer has a low dynamic resistance which
ensures stable output voltage regulation even during high current demands. The low
impedance components also contribute to increased system efficiency and less heat
dissipation.

2h. High Surge Suppression Capability

2i. Maintenance Bypass Switch

3. Basic Operation

The WDC Power Regulator utilizes an “on line” topology. The “on line” topology ensures a
high level of electrical isolation. The WDC Power Regulator provides continuous stable
output power regardless of the condition of the input power, with the exception of input power
loss (see figure A3-2).

The input three-phase AC power is routed into the rectifier circuitry. This circuitry converts
the AC voltage to DC voltage. The DC voltage routed to the inverter is used to regenerate
the AC output power.

With the advent of a loss of AC power to the input of the WDC Power Regulator, some ride
through is provided from the capacitors in the rectifier section. This ride through ranges from
one (1) second at no load to twelve (12) milli-seconds at full load.

The double conversion process, AC-DC-AC, has a regenerative effect on the power. The
WDC Power Regulator’s output power characteristics are isolated from the input power.
The WDC unit will provide constant three phase power even with the loss of one input phase
or incorrect phase rotation (auto-correction). Refer to the power path diagram, figure A3-1,
page 5.

5. Performance Features

Regulation

Highly accurate output voltage regulation is achieved by the interaction of the rectifier and
inverter sections. The WDC Power Regulator will maintain a cons tant voltage to the sensitive
load, even with wild utility power fluctuations. Both the rectifier and inverter assist in active
electronic voltage regulation.

The AC to DC rectifier provides regulated DC voltage to the inverter section. The DC voltage
remains constant, even if the input AC voltages vary between +10% to –15% of nominal. If
the input AC voltage drops below –15% of nominal, the DC voltage will begin to drop in
proportion to the input AC voltage. The regulating inverter section will compensate for this
and maintain constant output voltage. When the input voltage drops below –25% of the
nominal, the inverter can no longer maintain constant output voltage and will shut down.

Note: The WDC UPS System will receive DC voltage from the batteries during a deep utility
voltage sag or total blackout. Therefore, constant uninterrupted output voltage is maintained
to the load. There is no switch or transfer to the battery mode.

Upon return of the normal input AC voltage, the inverter will accept DC from the rectifier and
the AC output returns to nominal.

Note: The UPS System will begin to recharge the batteries upon return of the utility power.

Filtering

There are two basic filtering systems within the WDC Power Regulator.

1. Input Filter:
The input filter is made of two components. The first component is an EMC / RFI line filter to
prevent conducted and radiated noise. The second component is a surge suppression
device to protect the Power Regulator and the load from high energy electrical noise and
voltage spikes.

2. Output Filter:
The output filter is comprised of many parts: inductors, capacitors and a power transformer.
The WDC Power Regulator has high and low frequency capacitors which provide a wide
range of noise attenuation for EMC / RFI noise. The normal mode and common mode
attenuation is greater than –90 dB and –120 dB respectively.
An oil filled output capacitor works in conjunction with the inverter inductors to form a low
pass filter with a noise attenuation at 1.5 kHz. The design of the power transformer further
filters the output power for total harmonic distortion of less than 3%.

Page 8

Figure A3-2

Page 9
WDC POWER REGULATOR

Cooling

The WDC Power Regulator utilizes a fan cooling system to ensure high reliability, even under
harsh environmental conditions. Two 240 CFM fans are integrated into the top of the unit.
The two 240 CFM fans exhaust air from the WDC Power Regulator cabinet. One or more
fans are located in the inverter pulling air from the bottom of the WDC Power Regulator
across the inverter heat sink and out of the top of the inverter. The fans create a fast moving
air stream over the heat sink and power transformer assemblies.

Ruggedized System

The WDC Power Regulator basic design both electrically and mechanically is designed for
harsh environmental conditions.

The WDC Power Regulator frame is mechanically comprised of heavy duty angled painted
and anodized steel, to ensure structural integrity.

The distribution sidecar is comprised of the same material as the WDC Power Regulator
cabinet, but the distribution sidecar is a customer option and may not be installed.

The electrical harness and board connections are mechanically locked to resist degradation
due to vibration or temperature variations.

Pulse Width Modulation

The Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) circuitry comprises the power stage and the control logic.

The power stage is designed with power transistors (equal number per phase), which
produce the output AC voltage waveform. The power transistors are switched at high
frequency (5Khz to 15Khz) to ensure fast voltage regulation response. Fast response
transistors are critical for nonlinear loads, such as MRI and CT scanners.

The control logic is on two printed circuit boards controlled by a programmable

microprocessor board. The logic circuitry generates three independent control signals for the
power stage. The control signals are developed with feedback from several electrical
parameters, such as input and output voltage.

Page 10

B. Component Identification

1. Maintenance Bypass Switch

A front panel manual maintenance bypass switch has been incorporated for service and
reliability purposes.

In the unlikely event of a WDC Power Regulator failure, the bypass circuitry will allow a power
path to the critical load. The circuitry has been designed to bypass all active system
components (except the power transformer) to ensure an emergency bypass path for any
WDC Power Regulator component failure.

WARNING

Lethal voltages exist within the WDC Power Regulator cabinet, even when the unit is in the
“ON” or “bypass” mode. Only qualified service personnel with adequate training must
service this equipment.
The WDC Power Regulator may be serviced and maintained without disconnecting power to
the computer or medical equipment.

2. Main AC Breaker

When an over current condition exists, the input main circuit breaker will automatically
disconnect all input power. Whenever the WDC Power Regulator needs to be powered on or
off, the main AC breaker must be manually operated.

3. Emergency Off Push Button

Mounted into the front door of the WDC Power Regulator is a red push button labeled
"Emergency Off". This button, whe n pushed, will disconnect the main AC breaker. The
Emergency Off switch has a red indicator that becomes illuminated when the WDC Power
Regulator has output power, both in Manual or Auto mode as selected by the bypass switch.

The emergency switch is to be utilized for emergencies only. This is for the protection of
personnel and/or protection of physical property.

service and ventilation clearances as required by local code.

Input Power Requirements / Connections

1. After unpacking and inspecting the WDC Power Regulator for shipping damage and
reporting any such damage to the carrier, it is vital that the input power be connected
correctly at the required voltages.

2. The tightening torque rating for the terminal blocks is, 120 inch lbs. for 2 /0 to #6 AWG and
50 inch lbs. for #8 AWG wire.

3. It is highly recommended that a qualified electrician make all input and output power
connections.

4. It is vital that a true ground be brought into the unit, not a neutral. The ground conductor
should be the same size as the three input / primary voltage phase conductors.

5. Minimum wire to be used is, No.4 AWG, 75 deg. C copper wire.

The input power connections to the WDC Power Regulator are located under the top access
plate. Remove the top plate to gain access to the nine pole terminal block. The terminal
block is comprised of four input power connections (3 hots + ground), and five output power
connections (3 hots + neutral + ground). Phase rotation should be checked and verified for
clockwise rotation.

Note: The WDC Power Regulator will automatically configure the phase rotation in the
forward direction (even if the input power is mis-wired). However, the output of the WDC
Power Regulator will not automatically configure the phase rotation in the forward direction
while in the bypass (manual) mode. Therefore, the WDC Power Regulator output power
should be checked for proper forward phase rotation while in the bypass mode.

Grounding
1. The ground terminals centralize the system grounds for routing back to the building
service entry panel and the output load. The equipment grounding electrode terminals are all
tied to a single point within the cabinet along with all grounds from within the WDC Power
Regulator cabinet. This single point functions as a true, single-point ground. The output
neutral point, equipment ground, transformer core, cabinet and system ground are all tied
together at one point.

2. The tightening torque rates for the terminal blocks are, 120 inch lbs. for 2/0 to #6 AWG
and 50 inch lbs. for #8 AWG wire. Minimum wire to be used is, No. 4 AWG, 75 deg. C
copper wire.

Page 15

Output Over Current Protection

The output over current protection for the WDC Power Regulator will result in shut down of
the output power. This is accomplished by an internal electronic logic sensing circuit. The
output power will be automatically restored upon removal of the over current condition.

Shunt Trip Connections - Remote Emergency Power Off (REPO)

Both the WDC Power Regulator has connections for emergency shut down interface
purposes.

The WDC Power Regulator comes complete with a remote “shut down” box and a 50 foot
interface cable. The interface cable completes the circuit between the wall mounted “shut
down” box and the WDC Power Regulator. The cable has fifteen pin connectors (DB 15) on
each end. The DB 15 connector is located in the upper portion of the WDC Power Regulator.

The cable is shipped with one connector removed to ease routing through conduit. The
interface cable can be routed through ½” conduit with one connector removed. The interface
cable can be routed through 1½” conduit with both connectors attached.
Instructions are provided for connector re-attachment purposes.
The cable is a CLASS 2 type that is intended to carry a 24 Volt signal. Conduit is normally
