Corruption in civil engineering mainly in infrastructures

The construction sector shapes our present progressive world. It is one of the most

important industries in the world. Civil engineers are mainly responsible for this

sector.Where this sector is the key for development for countries. But in the same time it

can be the destructive key for a country if it was used in an improper way. As we go

deeper in corruption in civil engineering we see that infrastructure is the most corrupted

sector in public projects.

Infrastructures is the basic systems and services, such as transport and power supplies,

drainage systems, that a country or organization uses in order to work effectively

• Types of corruption in infrastructures sector :

• Inappropriate project choice,

• high prices,

• poor quality,

• excessive time and cost overruns,

• inadequate maintenance,

• and low returns,

• And this all impact negatively on economic growth

Getting narrower in corruption of infrastructures we can talk about Nigeria:

According to world bank (1994), corruption in African nations' infrastructure

sector are related to irregular practices during procurement processes by means of

bid rigging and kickback

• According to Sorunke (2013) in a survey on the economic and social

implications of corruption on infrastructural development in Nigeria. It was

discovered that the main condition to take a bid from the government, is that the

firm bidding or the owner of the firm should give the president or the minister a

specific percent of the bid profit. And by this the ministry will don’t follow up if

the work was done according to specifications.

• Also according to Awe 30 to 45% of the bid price should be paid as bribery to

win the bid.

• Niger Delta Development Commission, a presidential monitoring committee was

set up by the federal government to review the activities of the commission.

Institute Founds that 46.8 of the projects that was bided failed. That was

monitored by this committee. And the failure here means either of time or in

quality or the projects is not done but was paid.
