JACKSONVILLE

CITY CHURCH

Partnership Guide
IS MICHAEL?
Michael responded to God’s calling on his
life over eleven years ago when he joined
the staff of a church plant in Orange Park
as a youth minister. The following summer he
moved to the Panhandle to attend The Baptist

WHO
College of Florida. While in college, Michael
joined the staff of BCF and worked there for
over three years. In 2005, Michael graduated
college, married Rachel and moved back
to North East Florida to work on staff at First
Baptist Church of Middleburg.

For five-and-a-half years, Michael served on staff at FBC
Middleburg. For the last three years, he has enjoyed
pastoring the families of a contemporary worship service
that has grown from 130 to over 530 people. The senior
pastoral staff approached Michael in early 2010 about the
possibility of planting a church. It was at the same time
that Michael and Rachel were sensing God’s direction to
be a part of a work in the city. After several months of
discussion and prayer, plans were made to begin Michael’s
transition from a pastor at FBC Middleburg to establish a
conservative church in the heart of Jacksonville. Michael
and Rachel moved to their Riverside area apartment in
the fall of 2010. On Sunday, January 9, 2011, First Baptist
Church formally announced their support for Michael and
Jacksonville City Church.
A NEW
WHY
CHURCH
Although there are many reasons to plant a new church, the most
important reason is because Jesus told us to! In Matthew 28:19, Jesus
gives us a clear picture of what the church should be doing. The early
Christians understood that the church should always be multiplying.
It should not be a rare event. Instead, planting churches should be a
regular part of the growth and development of every Biblical church.

Here are a few more reasons we should be planting churches:

- New churches best reach new generations, new residents, and

new people groups. They develop new leaders and accept
newcomers more eagerly out of sheer necessity.

- New churches best reach the unchurched. The average new

church gains most of its new members from the unchurched,
while churches over 10 years old gain most of their new members
by transfer from other congregations.

- New churches are the most efficient and biblical form of missions
and disciple making. It was Paul’s strategy to go to a city and
establish churches there before he considered it reached.

Why focus on the Riverside/Avondale area?

We were led to this area over the course of several months.
Since then, we have discovered the following:
- It is one of the most diverse and populated areas of Jacksonville.
- There is a significant lack of biblical Christian influence.
- More 10,000 people live within a half-mile of our apartment.
- Many families have been left unreached by current churches.

PRAY
First, we need you to pray for us, the
church, our city and its people. We have
a lot going against us but we know who
is for us!

GIVE
We need you to give. Your regular
financial gifts will help us to become self-
sustainable more quickly. But even more
importantly, we believe that the New
Testament contains many examples of
believers personally supporting church
planting. Will you make a financial
sacrifice to advance the Gospel?
