Activity 2: The Cultural Differences between the East and West

INSTRUCTION: Read the short article written by Annalisa Merelli entitled, “The cultural differences
between East and West, according to one artist.” Study each pictorial representation of each cultural
behavior/aspect and discuss which of the two illustrations for each category represents that of the
Philippines. Give examples to illustrate your point if necessary.

CATEGORY DISCUSSION
Dealing with problems - In dealing with problems, those who are in the west (Blue) are more of
a sophisticated people and they tend do actually “DEAL WITH THE
PROBLEM” they are straightforward in solving problems. Unlike here
in the east (Red), especially here in the Philippines. It is evident even
from our government that they are not that straightforward in dealing
with problems, they tend to give their attention to something that isn’t
even related with the problem and not even helpful to the problem.
That’s why red is a perfect illustration for our country.
The boss - There in the west (Blue), their boss is very friendly and does not have a
high level of ego just because he/she is the “BOSS” they accompany
their employees at some point. And here in the Philippines the red one
is really applicable because, a lot of company here has a boss that
actually looks down to people that aren’t in his/her level.

Expressing opinion - Just like the different businessmen or known people in the western
countries, they are very straightforward within expressing their opinions
that is why at some point they tend to offend other people especially if it
comes to politics. Here in the east, particularly in the Philippines,
people tend to sales talk a lot of audience which somehow leads to
confusion. They are not that straightforward with the information that
they provide that’s why they sales talk the audience. That’s why the red
illustration again depicts the behavior of the Filipinos in expressing
their opinions.
Telling the truth - The red one is the perfect illustration for the Filipinos because in
fooling other people, those who are in the east are the ones that are good
in fooling people. Despite knowing the truth they would trick other
people as a revenge just because they got tricked in the first place. As
much as we know that majority of the fake products of different brands
are produced here in the east.

Personal branding - Those who are in the west are more vocal and they think less about the
ideas that they have. But those who are in the east, tends to think more
about their branding but the only problem they have is that they aren’t
that vocal because they tend to be shy at some point. If It were to be in
the Philippines, the red illustration is the one that perfectly fits it.
