Why Pixslate?
A Picture-Focused Translation App

● Pixslate is a translation app that allows users to take photos to translate


text and to define the objects in the photo.
● It is for anyone in a multilingual setting where they do not know all of the
languages being used.
What’s The Big Idea?
➔ Have you ever found yourself talking to
someone in another language and don’t
know the word for a specific object? Well,
with Pixslate you don’t have to worry!

➔ Using YOUR camera phone, you can


now select the language you wish to
speak, aim the camera at an object and
the translation will appear!

The Market:
● There are many different translation apps out there- the main one
being Google Translate. While the idea for a translation app isn’t
new, our idea is.

○ Handwriting analysis
○ Ability to choose starting and finishing languages
● What Makes Us Different:
○ Using the camera on your phone, our app allows users to
directly translate objects

Interaction Design based on User Task Analysis

USER GOALS, NEEDS AND TASKS:


● Goals: In the app, the user will want to point their camera at an object and choose the language they
want the object translated to. User will also want to hover over text in a language they aren’t familiar with
and have the app translate it for them in the language they prefer. Additionally, they’ll want to have the
ability to do basic translations, being able to simply type in a word or phrase in their preferred language
and translating it into another language of their choice.
● Needs: User will need the app to translate a language they cannot understand OR translate their
language to said language. For communication purposes or even learning purposes. Also, the user will
need access to their phone camera (given the app has permission to use it) in order to use the image
translation feature.
● Tasks: The user will pick the language they want translated, and then the language they want that
language translated to (i.e. English to Spanish). They can do this by simply typing and getting the
translation, or holding their camera up to the language they’re curious about and the translation will pop
up. The user will also point their camera (in the app) up to an object and be able to learn how to say/spell
that object in another language, of their choice of course.
INTERACTION DESIGN BASED ON USER TASK ANALYSIS
● Camera option is defaulted, so users can open the app easily and use the feature
● All buttons and menu options clearly visible
● Design and colors are simple, so app is easily understood by all users

User Test & Evaluation

● People need to communicate effectively


across the language barrier
● Our interaction design is based on
information we gathered during the User
Task Analysis. For the task analysis, we
asked our participant to translate a recipe a
competitor’s application and are building
our application around boosting the
productivity of that task.
● The most time consuming part of the task
was trying to load the camera and take a
photo. Our app will default to the camera to
allow for quick-and-easy use!
