Answer To Question Number : 1
RN stands for Registered Identification Number. It is a number issued by the Federal Trade
Commission (FTC) to U.S. businesses that manufacture, import, distribute, or sell products
covered by the Textile, Wool, and Fur Acts. It i a number, usually somewhere on the care labels,
most likely with the letters RN# before it .RN number is used in garments care label in stead of
the company name. One RN number can use for all garments and styles. RN number is not
related to any specific apparel product. A company can use the same RN number for all its
apparel products. By the RN number consumers can identify who is the owner of a cloth
brands, manufacturers, importer etc. We can also search the company name of an apparel
product that has given RN number in the label .

Answer To Question Number : 2

To convert fabric price from meter to KG by using the following formula

Weight (in gram) = Fabric length (in meter) X fabric width (in meter) X Fabric GSM

In the example:

Fabric length is 1 meter

Fabric width = 60inch convert it into meters = (60 * 2.54) /100 =1.524meters

Fabric GSM = 220 grams

Using above formula to find the result

Weight (in gram) = 1X 1.524 X 220 = 335.28 grams

Convert weight into Kg dividing it by 1000.

Therefore fabric weight will be 0.33528 Kgs

So, 1 meter of fabric is equivalent to 0.33528 Kg

For example fabric price is $2.50 we can say at $2.50 we will get 0.33528 kg ,therefore fabric
price will be $2.50/0.33528 = $7.45 . So per kg fabric price will be = $7.45.

Answer To Question Number : 3

Lab dip is a specimen of dyed fabric or yarns prepared for color approval and it is a sample of
fabric that has been dyed according to requirements. On the other hand Lab Dip or Lab Dye is a
small piece of fabric or swatch which is taken from an apparel style, colored to a particular
shade. Before bulk production of fabric and garment manufacturing, lab dip approval from the
buyer is very essential. The lab dip is usually made on a small swatch of fabric, which length
and width should be 6”X 6″. For example, if a lab dip matches to the original in tube light, it
will differ in sunlight. So the lab dips are to be made according to the buyer’s matching
system. It is the merchandiser’s responsibility to get the Lab dips from the processing mill and
to get approval from the buyer.
A strike off is a sample of fabric that has been printed according to requirements . on the
other hand , strike off means a test length of fabric specially printed in order to check the
pattern registration, pattern repeat and the matching shades in the design. During sample
development or prior to production printing, suppliers develop these strike-offs from a printer
or printing house. For strike-off sample printing, actual production fabric and actual base color
is used. This sample is get done by buyers artwork section to get an approval for print or
embroidery and repeat and size for the same. This trail samples made by printer or
computerized embroidery, which merchandiser sends to buyer for approval is known as strike
–off.

Bit loom is a familiar term that is used in garment supply chain by apparel buyers, fabric
manufacturers, merchandisers in woven garment manufacturing. It is one kind of fabric
development sample. Actually yarn dyed fabric swatches samples are called bit loom .It is
made with dyed yarns checks or stripes or self colored yarn with different counts of yarn .The
aim of using bit loom is to show the fabric design to the buyer for final look of the fabric
without spending much time in fabric preparatory processes and with minimum cost for fabric
development. Bit loom is made only for fabric sample approval from buyers. Sometimes
couple of samples are made with the development fabric.

ETD means Estimated Time of Delivery (shipment delivery schedule). That means shipment
departure from Loading port.

ETA means Estimated Time of Arrival (Shipment arrival schedule). That means shipment
arrival from loading port .

When sourcing is done through contracts and purchase order, ETD and ETA are important
dates for the contract. Especially the buyer's purchase order contains this terms. Actually ETD
and ETA are shipping terms and it is mostly used in apparel industry because apparel business
is a global business and international buyer and retailer source garments from various regions
around the world .When merchandiser contact with the buyer for shipment ETD and ETA are
used .

Answer To Question Number : 5

Ex-factory date is the date on which the garment manufacturer needs to keep the shipment
ready and need to move the shipment out from the factory and hand it over to the shipment
forwarder. Packing and garment inspection need to be done prior to the ex-factory date.
According to the ex-factory date, the garment manufacturer plans its production schedule,
pre-production and material sourcing schedule. Sometimes buyers want to keep shipment
ready at the factory on the ex-factory date and plan for picking it later. Later they can pick and
ship it together with other orders.

Answer To Question Number : 6

Thread average is known as average meters or yards of sewing threads required for making
one garment. This is including sewing thread wastage as thread tails at both ends of the seam
and leftover threads on cones/tubes. Each apparel product has a different thread average. For
example, a t-shirt may need 38 yards of thread and a jean need 223 yards of sewing thread .

Basically this is the task of Industrial engineers and they are responsible for calculating thread
consumption for production garments. But if in case the factory does not have the IE
department then the factory production manager do this task and give to merchandiser .Then
thread average is estimated based on work experience .
