Answer the Following:

Q1. Find the equation of motion of the mass for the system shown in figure 1 assuming the
horizontal bar to be rigid and is of negligible mass. 3M

Q2. A 1-DOF system has a mass of 𝟔 Kg, spring rate of 𝟔𝑲𝑵/𝒎 and damping force of 𝟑𝟔 𝑵
per 𝒎/𝒔 velocity. Determine the damping factor 𝑫, logarithmic decrement 𝜹 and time 𝝉
taken for 𝟔 cycles. What is the amplitude 𝑿 after 𝟏𝟖 cycles if initial amplitude is 3 cm? 5 M

Q3. A precision grinding machine is supported on an isolator that has a stiffness of

𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝑲𝑵/𝒎 and viscous damping rate of 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝑵𝒔/𝒎. The floor on which the machine is
mounted is subjected to a harmonic disturbance due to the operation of an unbalanced
engine of speed 𝟔𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝒓𝒑𝒎 in the vicinity of the grinding machine. Determine the
maximum acceptable displacement of the floor if the resulting amplitude of the grinding
wheel is to be restricted to 𝟏 𝝁𝒎. Assume the grinding machine and wheel are a rigid body
of weight 𝟓𝟎𝟎𝟎𝑵. 4M

Q4. A compressor and an engine are connected by a series of shafts forming two degree of
𝑵𝒎
freedom system with spring constants for the shafts as 𝑲𝟏 = 𝑲𝟑 = 𝟖𝟎𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝒓𝒂𝒅, 𝑲𝟐 =
𝑵𝒎
𝟑𝟓𝟎𝟎𝟎 𝒓𝒂𝒅 and mass moment of inertia of the compressor on left and engine on right is
𝟏𝟎𝟎 𝑲𝒈 − 𝒎𝟐 each. Show the 2-DOF system by a neat diagram. Draw the free body
diagram of the two rotors in dynamic condition. Determine the Eigen values and Eigen
vectors for the system after defining the characteristic equations. Draw the mode shapes
𝟑 𝟎
for the system. If the initial displacement and velocity are { } 𝒂𝒏𝒅 { } find the response of
𝟐 𝟎
the system. 8M
