Manistee native receives Defense Meritorious Service
Medal for time in Afghanistan

KABUL, AFGHANISTAN — The big
smile on Manistee native Army Lt. Col.
Gary Kuczynski’s face said it all when
Michigan Sen. Carl Levin (D, Mich.),
who heads up the Senate Armed Forces
Committee, presented him with the
Defense Meritorious Service Medal for his
service in Afghanistan with NATO forces.
It was the smile of a soldier who per-
formed his duties well in a stressful envi-
ronment, but more importantly, it came
from an Army officer who sees the bigger
picture on what is being accomplished in
that country through a coalition effort of
many countries.
Kuczynski, a 22-year veteran of the
Army, and an infantry officer serving out
of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment
was honored by Levin, on Saturday at
the NATO Training Mission-Afghanistan
headquarters in Camp Eggers in Kabul,
Afghanistan. The award

medal that is awarded by the
Department of Defense and
commends him for his ser-
vice over the past year with
NATO forces in Afghanistan.
He is the son of Dick
and Caroline Kuczynski of
Manistee, and they received
an e-mail from Gary’s com-
manding officer Lt. Gen.
William B. Caldwell, who
heads up the NATO forces
in Afghanistan, in regards
to that presentation. In that
e-mail, Caldwell praised the
job their son has done in
Afghanistan during the past
year. He also included pictures of Gary
receiving the medal from Sen. Levin.
“I wanted to send you a personal note
to share some photos of Gary meeting and
speaking with Sen. Levin earlier today,”
wrote Caldwell. “The senator actually
awarded Gary the Defense Meritorious
Service Medal in recognition of Gary’s
remarkable work over the past year. Sen.
Levin couldn’t stop speaking about how
much it meant to him to personally pres-
ent Gary’s award.

As varied as our proj-
ects have been this week,
they have a couple of
common threads. First,
it’s going to be a very pro-
ductive year in Manistee
County and the surround-

Band at the joyful return to
Manistee’s Independence
Parade and do some seri-
ous business while we’re
at it.

ects your chamber has

Manistee hasn’t the faint-
est idea how to hibernate
during the winter! Ignoring

The concert will fea-
ture Shout, Sister, Shout,
a musical group that was
formed when singer song-
writer Rachael Davis and
the quartet Steppin’ In It
found a common love for
the jazz music of the 1930s
and ’40s.
The group was formed
in the fall of 2007 and soon
afterwards was signed by
New York’s M.C. Records.
Their first album was
released in the spring of
2009.

be on leave at that point,
and he plans on coming
home to Manistee. He likes
Michigan, and was here for
a couple weeks break back
in October.”
His father, Richard, is
just as proud of his son and
what he has accomplished
in his military career.
“He is doing a good job,
and he has been to a lot of
different places that have
been interesting for him
and for us,” said Richard.
“He was in Korea stationed
on the DMZ (demilitarized
zone) where he stayed
and did an extra tour. He
was the last commander
of American troops before
it was turned over to the
South Koreans, and he also
did a tour of the combat
zone in Iraq (where he
received a bronze star).”
The senior Kuczynski
said that he and his wife
were touched by the fact
that General William
Caldwell took the time to
send them a personal e-
mail about their son.
“I answered him back,
and he sent another
response back to me as
well,” said Richard.
The Army Lt. Colonel
said that he is looking for-
ward to returning to the
Manistee area when he gets
some leave time.
“First thing I am going
to do is hug my parents,”
said Kuczynski. “My parents
are tremendous supporters
of myself, and of those who
serve. They are absolutely
believers in all of us, and in
what we are doing. They’re
strength; they’re a shoulder
when things get tough, and
when you’re far away that
deserves a big hug.”
The presentation by
Levin is something that
Kuczynski said was made
the event even more special
to him.
“To have Sen. Levin
pin the award on, it was a
great way to cap it off,” said
Kuczynski of his time in
Afghanistan. “You’re proud
to be a soldier to have this
happen, and you’re proud
to be from the State of
Michigan to have your sen-
ator pin this on. It’s a very
high award and this means
a lot.”
Some of his duties
in Afghanistan centered
around what NATO and 40
countries are attempting to
achieve in that country by
growing the Afghan secu-
rity forces. It is work that
Kuczynski said made a dif-
ference in that country.
“To be part of an effort
by more than 40 countries
that are working to grow
the Afghan army, police and
air force, the Afghanistan
National Security Force is
really a high watermark,”
said Kuczynski. “Working
with the coalition, working
with sister services, working
in this environment is not
just an individual effort.”
It is an effort that thou-
sands of Americans from
across the country and
world are doing on a daily
basis to make the world
safer place for everyone.
