BSIE – 1301
Noli Me Tangere is a Spanish novel penned by a genius writer, a Filipino
propagandist and a Philippine national hero, Jose Protacio Rizal.  During the course of his
medical studies, he had simultaneously labored with so much political anguish and
personal grief, while writing the most sensational novel in the face of Philippine history.
Finally, the novel was published in the year 1897 in Berlin, Germany.

The novel mirrors the creator’s will in attaining freedom from Spaniards. True
enough, as Rizal aimed to redeem the country and its people by exposing the barbarity,
greed, cruelty and ignorance of the Spanish colonizers, his work truly reflected the
struggles of the Filipinos. He specifically portrays the different aspects of gaining
independence such as the social climbers, abusive power, family devotion, self sacrifice,
purity and faithfulness. It tells us of how people of authority abuse their powers to fulfill
their own gain.

Now, having a background about this novel, we acknowledged the hero’s

patriotism. This novel will make every Filipino possess the love for the country and the
dedication to fight for what is right for our country. The book had effectively conveyed
the love for one’s country, gratefulness towards the society and its people, and also the
common sense of the Filipino race under the rule of Spain. Also, this novel reflects Jose
Rizal’s courage with his writings. This will be an inspiration to the next generation to
have that courage, not only having this potential but rather the application of it. Noli Me
Tangere wants to imply one’s dignity and a reminder to every Filipino especially to the
leaders of our country that their position should be used for the progress of the country
and not for the power, fame and money. That it is Filipinos is not a privilege but a sincere
commitment to be honest and selfless at all times. Additionally, this novel will be a
constant reminder that bureaucracy must not be a role model of inefficiency, but a legacy
of excellence, transparency, honesty, respect, integrity and, most especially, of honor.

In the advent of technology and Filipino consumerism tinged with colonial

mentality, we tend to forget our own culture, way of living and the challenges that our
ancestors had faced just to free our country from oppression. We need to be reminded of
these things, so we won’t forget who we are. The legacy that our heroes has left us
shouldn’t be forgotten. Hence, it should be passed through our future generations. We
should learn to apply and integrate the ideals and teachings found in the book to the
current problems of our society. Lastly, the essence of patriotism should be instilled not
only in the minds, but in the hearts of every Filipino.
