Noli Me Tangere is a Spanish novel penned by a genius writer, a Filipino
propagandist and a Philippine national hero, Jose Protacio Rizal. During the course of his
medical studies, he had simultaneously labored with so much political anguish and
personal grief, while writing the most sensational novel in the face of Philippine history.
Finally, the novel was published in the year 1897 in Berlin, Germany.
The novel mirrors the creator’s will in attaining freedom from Spaniards. True
enough, as Rizal aimed to redeem the country and its people by exposing the barbarity,
greed, cruelty and ignorance of the Spanish colonizers, his work truly reflected the
struggles of the Filipinos. He specifically portrays the different aspects of gaining
independence such as the social climbers, abusive power, family devotion, self sacrifice,
purity and faithfulness. It tells us of how people of authority abuse their powers to fulfill
their own gain.
