QUESTIONS (ROMEO & JULIET)

1. WHAT DETAILS FROM THE SELECTION PERTAIN TO THE FOLLOWING ELEMENTS?

A. SITUATION

 Romeo sneaks into orchard that has a view of Juliet's window and professes his love for her
though she cannot hear him. He reveals himself, and they reaffirm their affections, but Juliet
is more cautious and practical.

B. CHARACTERS

 Romeo and Juliet

C. PLOT

 In the streets of Verona another brawl breaks out between the servants of the feuding
noble families of Capulet and Montague. Benvolio, a Montague, tries to stop the fighting,
but is himself embroiled when the rash Capulet, Tybalt, arrives on the scene. After citizens
outraged by the constant violence beat back the warring factions, Prince Escalus, the ruler of
Verona, attempts to prevent any further conflicts between the families by decreeing death
for any individual who disturbs the peace in the future. Romeo, the son of Montague, runs
into his cousin Benvolio, who had earlier seen Romeo moping in a grove of sycamores. After
some prodding by Benvolio, Romeo confides that he is in love with Rosaline, a woman who
does not return his affections. Benvolio counsels him to forget this woman and find another,
more beautiful one, but Romeo remains despondent.

D. STYLE

 Romeo and Juliet is written in blank verse, which is a less-fancy way of saying "unrhymed
iambic pentameter." "Unrhymed" is pretty straightforward, but let's break down that iambic
pentameter stuff.

2. WHICH DETAILS FROM THE SELECTION WOULD SHOW THE LOVE BETWEEN THE
CHARACTERS?

 At the beginning Juliet tries to temper Romeo's passion by showing concern for his safety
and caution for their feelings.

3. WHY DOES ROMEO SAY, “MY NAME, DEAR SAINT, IS HATEFUL TO MYSELF?” DOES JULIET
HAVE THE SAME CONCERN?

 Romeo understand the hates of Juliet's family feels towards him based on his last name.
Juliet hates that she has so little control over her own life welfare.

4. WHAT REQUESTS ARE THE CHARACTERS MAKING FOR EACH OTHER?

 Romeo requests that they exchange vows of love, even though Juliet has already expressed
that she thinks it is too soon to exchange vows.

5. ACCORDING TO SOME SCHOLARS, SHAKESPEARE’S ROMEO AND JULIET IS A “TRAGEDY OF

HASTE” WHAT LINES FROM THE SELECTION ILLUSTRATE THIS SENSE OF “HASTE” INVOLVING
THE TWO CHARACTERS?

 Haste, along with youthful impetuousness, is a central theme of Romeo and Juliet. The
whole play is structured around the speed with which the two title characters fall in love and
try to marry, knowing that their families' feud will probably separate them.

6. IN WHAT WAYS ARE ROMES AND JULIET SIMILAR TO AND DIFFERENT FROM CONTEMPORARY
COUPLES?

 Romeo and Juliet are alike in being young people who fall quickly and passionately in love,
are impatient to get married, and are willing to ignore the feud between their families to be
together. Both would rather die than be apart. Romeo, however, is much more in love with
the idea of being in love than Juliet is.
