Purpose of Physical Education

Physical education is a process of learning, the context being mainly physical. The
purpose of this process is to develop specific knowledge, skills, and understanding and to
promote physical competence. It has a real contribution to the human development.
Instruction in physical education is an active process directly involving the adolescents’
initiative and responsibility in what regards their own training.

In general Physical Education serves four important purposes:

1. Physical Education increases physical fitness. The goal of Physical Education is to

incorporate the skill related components and health related components.

2. Physical Education nurtures a natural love of moving and involving different activities.

3. Everyday in Physical Education students learn and practice basic locomotors and non-
locomotors, manipulative (dribbling, kicking, throwing) and non-manipulative (balancing,
twisting, rolling) skills, as well as, and spatial concepts (up, down, over/under, right/left).

4. Physical Education helps create good citizens. Possibly the most important benefit of
Physical Education is the teaching and reinforcement of all aspects of good citizenship. In
every class fair play, responsibility, cooperation, sharing, honesty, and other virtues are
strongly stressed.

Importance of Physical Education

The importance of physical education and physical activity in our society is encouraged by a
number of guiding principles entrenched in active living such as:

1. Promotes a way of life in which physical activity is valued, enjoyed, and integrated into
daily life.
2. Promotes the principle of individual choice by responding to learners' individual needs,
interests, and circumstances.
3. Provides a unique contribution to lifelong development of all learners, enhancing their
physical, cognitive, social, emotional, and spiritual well-being.
4. Facilitates learning processes, which encourage critical thinking, thereby affecting the
learners' personal wellness and the well-being of society.
5. Nurtures individual self-reflection and consciousness, which preserves human rights and
the development of supportive and sustainable environments.

MY READING TEXT
The most typical task of the job of any sports manager or any physical education teacher is
to organize a variety of sports events, most often matches, races and competitions. Here are
the different types of sports events.
COMPETITIONS
One of the most common types of sports events are competition based. This usually happens
over a certain period of time, in a season. This type of event can be made up of smaller
events – like a league.

TOURNAMENT
This is similar to a competition style event however it happens over a shorter period of time
or this could be a junior tournament happening over a weekend. It could also be an
international tournament like the World Cup, happening over a four week period.

TRAINING CAMPS
These types of events are usually targeted at talented players or athletes and are often
residential. Participants will travel to a specific suited to their sport and participate in
numerous different activities.

COACHING COURSE
They are run to help people qualify as coaches or match officials and help to teach skills and
instil knowledge. There are a wide variety of these courses available and are run all over the
country.

SPONSORED EVENTS
This type of event is very common at grassroots level as clubs and teams try to raise money
and funds through sporting activities. These events can range in scale, from a small local
event like a sponsored bike ride to one on a large national scale like the London marathon.

FIELD TRIPS
School and colleges regularly organize this type of event so students can learn about a
specific topic in a different environment. If taking children on trips away from school/college
parental permission and safety checks will have to take place before the event occurs.

OUTDOOR EDUCATION
This is similar to a field trip but occurs in the outdoors. These types of events often include
outdoor activities such as sailing, climbing, walking and other water sports.
