2. Enclosure Design – Lifting Device to enable “lifted/removed tyre” testing as
specified in ISO/CD 11819-2 para. 7.3.2.1 (for background noise measurement)

Lifting Mechanism
A lifting mechanism is designed for suspending the whole test tyre assembly to keep
no contact with the ground during non- measurement operation. This design also
facilitates the performance of the “Lifted/ removed Tyre” test in identifying the
background noise as specified in paragraph 7.3.2.1 of ISO 11819-2. The mechanism
consists of a mechanical winch, wire rope, guiding tracks and track wheels. The
whole test wheel assembly is lifted by the mechanical winch with a wire rope. The
vertical movement is guided by tracks made of two U-channels. The wheels are
trapped inside the track such that only one degree of freedom is allowed. At the upper
and lower limits of the track, there are pin holes for securing and hence there is no
tension induced to the wire rope. The stroke of the vertical movement is 300mm and
there will be sufficient clearance between the test wheel and road surface when lifted
up.
3. Acoustic Enclosure

An acoustic enclosure is built to cover the test tyre and the microphones for sound
insulation from unwanted background noise. Balancing the shielding performance and
safety issues, the lower rim of the enclosure is kept 100mm above the ground. The
enclosure is composed of an acoustic foam, hard rubber sheet, honeycomb panel, high
density glass fiber and protected by an aluminum sheet on the outside.

4. Testing Tyre Specification

Dimension:
Yokohama 185/65 R15

Pattern:

Tread pattern depth:

In para. A.8 of the ISO/CD 11819-2, it says the tread pattern depth should be 8.5mm
+/- 1mm. This is after a run- in minimum of 100 km (see 7.4).

Tyre Tread Hardness:

As specified in para. A.7 of ISO/CD 11819-2

Max. loading and speed:

max. loading: 560kg, max. speed: 210km/hr

5. Towing Vehicle

The towing vehicle is Nissan Pathfinder 4-wheel drive with 3275 cc cylindrical
capacity. It is powerful enough to tow the trailer at the required test speeds (i.e., 50,
80 and 110 km/h) and its gasoline engine is relatively quiet. A Global Positioning
System (GPS) and a temperature sensor are installed in the vehicle for recording and
measuring the vehicle speed and air temperature. A DC-AC voltage inversion and an
addition battery charging system are installed for powering the equipments. A
microwave speed sensor capable of recording second-by-second instantaneous speed
is also installed to help control and record speed in urban environment where GPS
signal may be too weak.

6. Sound Acquisition and Analysis System

The B&K Pulse system is adopted which enable instantaneous sound signals from the
two microphones to be recorded. Free field microphones complied with IEC 651 Type
1 standard are used to measure the sound pressure. Digital data once acquired are
storied into the computer directly. It is extreme ly convenience and eliminates any
possible error introduced during data transmission.
