5. Combination Ratio of Indoor Capacity

In the Johnson Cotrols YORK Inventer VRF System, the combination ratio shall comply
with the following two conditions:

50% ≤
∑ Rated Total Indoor Units Capacity ≤ 130%
∑ Rated Total Outdoor Units Capacity
and Σ(Rated cooling capacity of Indoor Units) ×α (coincidence factor) ≤ Σ(Rated cooling
capacity of outdoor Units).
Note: α is the indoor unit coincidence factor (α≤1.0) that is the rated capacity ratio of
allowed simultaneous running indoor units and the all indoor units.
If the two conditions mentioned above are not met, then another effort at unit selection is
necessary.

CAUTION:The heating capacity will be reduced when the total capacity of all
! running indoor units is higher than the total capacity of all outdoor units.

7. Equivalent Pipe Length Calculation

Equivalent pipe length is the converted pipe length after considering the pressure drop
caused by elbow, oil bend and branch, etc.
Equivalent pipe length = Acutal pipe length + Quantity of elbow x (Equivalent length of
elbow) + Quantity of oil bend x (Equivalent length of oil bend) + Equivalent length of branch.
Wherein, the equivalent length of the “Y” type branch junction is 0.5m and the equivalent
length of “Comb” type branch junction is 1.0m.
Refer to table 1-5 for equivalent length conversion table of elbows and oil storage
elbows.

9. Precaution for Piping Connection

1) Piping work must be performed by the specially trained personnel who is trained by
YORK Company or designated by YORK Company. The personnel who is responsible for
soldering must be certified.
2) The piping size and process must comply with specification.
3) Pipe openings must be sealed to prevent water and impact.
4) Must be sure pipe is dry, clean and tight during installation
5) The brazing joints shall not be located at any covert places like wall corner so that it
would be convenient for leakage detect and service.
6) Meausre the actual length of all real connection pipes on the site so as to add
additional refrigerant.
7) Piping installation must comply with layout design. Must to put on record if any
change happens for future reference.
8) It is recommended to use elbow if needed. Bending radius must be larger than 3.5
times of pipe’s diameter.
9) Pipe openings must be sealed when the pipe crosses the wall and floor so as to
prevent water and impurity entering pipe inside.
10) Pipe shall be protected by sleeves when crossing walls or floors. Need to consider
the heat insulation thickness and other piping requirement to determine the sleeve size. Do
not use pipe sleeve to support piping. Need to fill unflammable soft material in the gap
between the pipe and the sleeve.

Part 4 Refrigerant Line Maintenance

1. Pipe Cleaning
After brazing piping but before connecting to indoor units, piping shall be cleaned by dry
nitrogen to remove the moisture and dust. Clean the gas line and liquid line separately. Refer
to the figure below; do not take off the seal on indoor units to avoid dirt entering it. Clean the
pipe one by one if piping is very long.

Figure 4-1
Operating Steps:
1)Leave one opening only and block others for cleaning by nitrogen.
2)Open the nitrogen bottle valve and adjust the pressure to 5kfg/cm2. Check if nitrogen is
blowed out of the opening.
3)Hold the insulating material to block the tube outlet. When the pressure becomes too great
to be propped up, remove the insulating material very quickly. Repeat the step again.
4)Place a light color rag or white paper at the outlet to check if there is still dirt or moisture.
Repeat the blowing until there’s no dirt or moisture. Please seal the piping well if the
connection won’t be completed right now.
5)Clean other pipes in the same way.

2. Air Tight Test

¾ Test Phase
Phase 1: Check the air tightness of the refrigerant line at indoor side when it is connected to
indoor units but is not connected to outdoor units.

Figure 4-2
Phase 2: Connect the refrigerant line to outdoor units after phase 1 passes the air tightness
test. Charge about 0.4 MPa of gas mixture of refrigerant and nitrogen (The pressure of the
6U3O-B0IA-NA-EN
29
Refrigerant Line Maintenance VRF Air-Conditioner IOM

gas mixsture shall not higher than the refrigerant pressure in outdoor units). Then use halide
leak detector to check the connection at outdoor units.

! WARNING: Must charge the nitrogen slowly to both liquid line and gas line simultanously
and slowly to avoid damages.
! WARNING: Do not open the isolating valves.
! CAUTION:
1) Nitrogen pressure varies with ambient temperature. Do not mix any moisture and other
gases to refrigerant piping. Record the temperature while charging and checking so as to
correct the temperature variation.
2)Vaccum the piping to remove the air and moisture before the air tightness test so as to
eliminate the effect on nitrogen pressure and find out the leakage easily.
3) Take care not to damage the isolating valve while connecting the refrigerant line to
outdoor unit. Otherwise, it may cause refrigerant leakage. Please refer to the method in page
11, “Isolating Valve”.

¾ Operating Steps
Step 1: Charge the dry nitrogen gas slowly. Maintain the pressure for three minutes after it
rises to 1.5MPa. Go to step 2 if no pressure drops; Otherwise, find out the leak point.
Step 2: Go on charging the dry nitrogen gas slowly. Maintain the pressure for three minutes
after is rises to 3.0MPa. Go on step 3 if no pressure drops; Otherwise, find out the leak point.
Step 3: Go on charging the dry nitrogen. Maintain the pressure for ten minutes after it rises to
4.0MPa. Start timing if no pressure drops. Otherwise, find out the leakage point. Record the
ambient temperature and pressure at that time and check the temperature and pressure
again after 24hrs. Air tightness test will be passed if no pressure drops with the correction by
variation of ambient temperature. Otherwise, find out the leak point and repeat the test again
until it is passed.
¾ Equation for pressure drop
The pressure variation caused by ambient temperature is calculated by the following equation.
273 + t1
Δp = p1 − p2
273 + t 2
Here, △p—— Pressure variation (MPa);
p1—— Absolute pressure at the test beginning (MPa);
p2—— Absolute pressure at the test end (MPa);
t1—— Ambient temperature at the test beginning (℃);
t2—— Ambient temperature at the test end (℃)。

¾ Operating Instruction
1) It can reduce the complexity of leakage check to perform the air tightness test into small
stages.
2) The pressure gauge needs to meet the requirement of range and precision. The precision
shall be higher than 1.5 grades and the pressure gauge shall be certified. The range of the

6U3O-B0IA-NA-EN
30
Refrigerant Line Maintenance VRF Air-Conditioner IOM

pressure gauge must be higher than test pressure. Recommended range is 1.5 – 2.0 times of
tested pressure.
3) Vaccum and pressure maintaining on oil balance pipes are necessary for the application
of multiple outdoor units as well. Open all the oil isolating valves on the connected outdoor
units if air tight test is passed.
4) If the units are needed to be laid aside for a period, nitrogen pressure must be released
so as not to damage the unit. Do not release the pressure less than the barometric pressure
so as not to mix the air to refrigerant piping. Recommend to release the pressure to 0.4MPa.
5) The screw caps on isolating valves must be tightened up to seal the system and reduce
the aging of the seals.

! CAUTION: The tightening torque must comply with specifications. Please refer to table
2-4 in page 12, Requirement of tighting torque on liquid and oil isolating valve(N·m).

3. Vacuum and Dry

Vacuuming and drying are the process to pump out the moisture. Please connect the vacuum
pump as following illustration and then vacuum and dry the piping.

Figure 4-3
Operating Steps
1) Vaccum the piping system at least two hours. It demonstrates that there are moisture
and/or leakage if the vacuum degree cannot get down to -100.7kPa or lower. Go on
vacuumming pipe system one more hour. Shall to check the leak point if the vacuum degree
still keeps higher than -100.7kPa after the three hours.
2)Close the shutoff valve and vacuum pump after -100.7 kPa is reached. Lay aside the
system for one hour. It is passed if vacuum degree does not rise. Otherwise, there are
moisture or leak points.

! CAUTIONS:
1)Vacuum the system from both liquid line and gas line simultaneously. Do not power off the
vacuum pump while vacuuming. Otherwise the lubration oil in vacuum pump will be suck to
refrigerant piping system.
2)The displacement of vacuum pump shall not be less than 40L/min. Need to make sure the
vacuum gauge is available for -100.7kPa and lower.
3)Shall install the electrical check valve to prevent the lubration oil being sucked into
refrigerant pipe system.
4)After vacuum and before refrigerant charging, do not change the connection valves in

6U3O-B0IA-NA-EN
31
Refrigerant Line Maintenance VRF Air-Conditioner IOM

order to avoid the air entering refrigerant piping system.

4. Piping Insulation
Piping insulation will prevent condensing, drip, scald and heat loss.
Notes about piping insulation:
1)The insulation material shall be adiathermal, antiflaming and thermostability, etc.
2)All the refrigerant pipes including the branches, couplings and so on shall be thermally
insulated well.
3)The gas line and liquid line shall be thermally insulated separately and then tie up them
together. Do not press the insulation much by tape so as to ensure the insulation performance.
4)The requirements for thermal insulation: heat conductivity λ ≤ 0.040W/( m• K) at 20℃ and
damp obstruction ≥800
5)Thermal insulation thickness: Thickness ≥15mm when pipe diameter D ≤12.7mm;
Thickness ≥20mm when pipe diameter D >12.7mm. Thickness depends on the heat
conductivity of heat insultion. Thickness may be reduced a little if heat conductivity is small;
Add thickness appropriately if environment temperature and humidity are higher.
