Western’s overstocked
supplies find new life
Better too much than too little.
That’s the sentiment at Western
when it comes to having enough
supplies on hand when faced with
the threat of a flu pandemic.
In response to various flu scares,
Western installed nearly 400 hand
sanitizers and stocked up on sup-
plies last year.
With an expiration date of May
2012, it became clear the University
had stocked too much sanitizer.
“There was no way we were
going to be able to use this much
product,” explained Elgin Austen,
director of Campus Community
Police Services for Western.
Western considered donating the
supplies to the Red Cross for Haiti
relief, but discovered it would not be
possible
“We started looking at those in
Ontario who we could potentially
help. The aboriginal communities
tend to be under-resourced and we
were eventually able to make con-
tact [with them] through the polic-
ing division of the OPP,” he said.
Along with the sanitizer, masks
and latex gloves are currently being
distributed to as many as 50 poten-
tial First Nations communities
throughout the province.
Austen said besides a sigh of
relief over unrealized flu epidemics,
there are benefits to stocking up on

A kingfisher is a bird that nests on a


body of freshwater during the winter
and, according to folklore, will stop
all winter storms as its eggs hatch.
Kingfisher Days, performed at the
Grand Theatre, is a play about stop-
ping time, for just a little while, to
celebrate life and youth, or to reflect
on age and experience.
The play focuses on how people
from varying age groups experience
time. Written by Gemini award-
winning author and television
writer Susan Coyne, the play is
based off her bestselling memoir of
the same title.
Kingfisher Days follows the
author — as an adult and mother —
reflecting on her own childhood
experiences in Northern Ontario in
the summer of 1963.
Susan, a self-professed “unreli-
able narrator,” shows the audience
her four-year-old self and her inter-
