This October in Kuala Lumpur MAP presents:

Ringan-ringan
Hasanul Isyraf Idris Ahmad Salahuddin (Hudd Samad) Issarezal Ismail

MAP is extremely excited to announce Ringan-ringan, an exhibition of works by Hudd Samad, Hasanul
Isyraf Idris and Issarezal Ismail, who together form local artist group Sikat Sembur. This event will take
place at White Box, Solaris Dutamas, from 23 October – 4 November 2010.

In this unprecedented exhibition, three popular and collected artists will show paintings together for the
first time, having previously only exhibited separately and to individual acclaim.
Uniting for Ringan-ringan as friends and professional peers on a common thread, their visuals are
fuelled by the thunderous influence of street art and sub-cultures on creativity worldwide. Each has
produced original work for the exhibition, manipulating varied inspirations towards a localised flavour
and reflecting the decades-in-the-making creeping hold of underground pop-culture on young Malaysian
art. Relevant and fresh, Ringan-ringan outlines a directional aspect of local mainstream painting that is
set to become huge.

Ringan-ringan will give an accessible overview of the recent progression of each artist, while street-style
energy and shared techniques such as aerosol stenciling will showcase the exciting talent of Sikat
Sembur as a whole. 28 year old Ahmad Salahuddin says of his painting process, “I think of stenciling as
drawing: when I cut out the shape I’m drawing with the knife. And then that can be put on canvas, on
the street, anywhere. A lot of us have been influenced by Lowbrow art, the skateboarding scene and
Juxtapoz magazine - since our school days.” The resulting works by Ahmad, who often uses text as a
launching point, are an exciting blend of intricate detail and haphazard urgency, offering up Malaysia’s
artistic signage of the future. The artist’s personal connections between common phrases and
recognizable imagery – local and foreign, political and popular – are not to be missed.

Opening reception for Ringan-ringan will take place on October 23 at 8pm, all are invited to attend.
Exhibition dates: Saturday 23 October – Thursday 4 November 2010.
