INTRODUCTION

Community engagement is the process of working collaboratively with community groups to

address issues that impact the well-being of those groups. Activities that help firms engage the

community includes credible and transparent reporting, town hall meetings and collaborative

decision making. Community engagement is both a process (how we do things e.g., ensuring that

communities have a say in decision making) and an outcome (what we want to achieve e.g.,

community building or involving parents in a school). In planning and decision making,

community engagement is largely used as a process, but in community development and service

delivery, community engagement is often both a process and an outcome.

Environmental sustainability has become a prominent global issue with many groups now

working to develop plans about the use and preservation of natural resources (Scerri, 2009). As

universities prepare students to address critical issues in a complex society, pedagogy and

curriculum development have broadened to include thoughtful responses to environmental issues

(Williams et al., 2008). Much of the study on the environment tends to be grounded in the

physical and biological sciences and technology driven, but new approaches to sustainability also

examine the role of human relationships as critical factors in reaching the goals for

environmental sustainability (Stocker & Kennedy, 2009).

Project EEMSD: Environmental Engagement a Move for Sustainability and Development is a

project for the people of Brgy. Sagpatan Dingras Ilocos Norte. The aim of the project is to

increase the sustainable development in their community, to encourage volunteers and active

participation of the young people in environmental protection and awareness campaigned

addressed to the local people. The participants will be the members of the 4p’s, Barangay

Officials and the Sanguniang Kabataan Officials and Members of the said community.
NARRATIVE REPORT

Sustainability is a broad discipline, giving students and graduates insights into most

aspects of the human world from business to technology to environment and the social sciences,

in a modern world looking to drastically reduce carbon emissions and discover and develop the

technologies of the future. Sustainability draws on politics, economics and, philosophy and other

social sciences as well as the hard sciences. Sustainability skills and environmental awareness is

a priority because sustainability looks to protect our natural environment, human and ecological

health, while driving innovation and not compromising our way of life.

We are now living in a modern, consumerist and largely urban existence throughout the

developed world and we consume a lot of natural resources every day. In our urban centers, we

consume more power than those who live in rural settings and urban centers use a lot more

power than average, keeping our streets and civic buildings lit, to power our appliances, our

heating and other public and household power requirements. Sustainability and sustainable

development focuses on balancing that fine line between competing needs - our need to move

forward technologically and economically, and the needs to protect the environments in which

we and others live. Sustainability is not just about the environment, it's also about our health as a

society in ensuring that no people or areas of life suffer as a result of environmental legislation,

and it's also about examining the longer term effects of the actions humanity takes and asking

questions about how it may be improved.

That’s why our group proposed the PROJECT EEMSD: Environmental Engagement:

A Move for Sustainability and Development with the aim of to increase the sustainable

development in their community, to encourage volunteers and active participation of the young
people in environmental protection and awareness campaigned addressed to the local people.

The participants will be the members of the 4p’s, Barangay Officials and the Sanguniang

Kabataan Officials and Members of the said community.

We conducted the activity on February 10, 2019 at 3:00 pm in Brgy. Sagpatan,

Dingras,Ilocos Norte under the leadership of Hon. Lydia A. Valencia and SK Chairman Hon.

Mark Jeryll Sahagun, with the objectives of Increasing of Sustainable Development in their

Community , encouragement of volunteers and active participation of young people in

environmental protection and a wide awareness campaign addressed to local people.

We arrive their at 2:30 pm and we prepared the place and the plants were going to use,

after a couple minutes the SK Chairman arrive in the place then we started to clean the area.

Sadly after more minutes of waiting we decided to start our planting session, to our dismayed

only a few come and engage with our project. But even though, we continued planting and after

which we watered the plants. After which, we gave our little appreciation to Hon. Sahagun and

Hon. Valencia and after it we distributed the foods we prepare for them, and went home.

Even though our activity didn’t fulfilled its aim we are still thankful of the opportunity

that was given to us, because of the project our group are able to build unity, good

communication and a good relationships towards each other, because of the project we are able

to share our knowledge, we cooperate and collaborate to have a good action plan it’s just that the

community we choose doesn’t have the community engagement and unity we expect. But then

we still believe that everything happens for a reason.
