1. What is a malignant tumor?  How is it different from a benign tumor?

A malignant tumor is a type of tumor that keeps growing throughout the body. It is
different from a benign tumor since the benign tumor does not affect other parts of
the body.

2. What do we call a mutated gene that negatively affects the cell cycle control system,
causing cancer?

The mutated gene that affects the cell cycle control system is called the Oncogene.

3. What is growth factor?  How can a mutated growth factor protein cause cancer?

Growth factor is a protein that stimulates cell division. A mutated growth factor
protein can cause cancer as it can overstimulate cell division.

4. What do tumor suppressor genes code for?  How can a mutation in a tumor
suppressor gene cause cancer?

Tumor suppressor genes code for cell cycle regulation. A mutation in them can cause
cancer as it fails to regulate the cell division.

5.  What is the medical advantage of using radiation to treat cancer?

The medical advantage of using radiation to treat cancer is that radiation can disrupt
local cell division.

6. What is the medical advantage of using chemotherapy to treat cancer?  

The medical advantage of using radiation to treat cancer is that it disrupts cell
division throughout the entire body.

7. We listed several ways to reduce cancer risk in lecture.  What were they? Do you
participate in any of these behaviors already?  Are there any behaviors you could
include in your lifestyle? 

The ways listed to reduce cancer risk are eating a healthy diet, performing exercise,
do regular screenings, putting on sun protection, and not smoking. I already do
some of these, however I could do more.
