THY 4 INSTRUCTION FOR SELF-PACED LEARNING

UNIT 3, LESSONS 1 & 2 (CONCERN FOR NATURE AND COMMITMENT TO SOCIETY)

After studying Units 1 and 2 and understanding all the topics on Harmony and Dialogue, we shall now
embark on Unit 3 which talks about certain Papal Documents that are worthy of perusal since they
provide us not just clear points for discussion but also important insights on Church’s teachings which
are relevant as we view and scrutinize the reality of the world today.

For Unit 3, Lesson 1, kindly do as instructed for your self-paced learning. The ones in RED FONT are what
you should answer or fill in (you may erase the lines provided). Your answers must be in BLUE FONT:

I. STUDY
Read Chapters 1-3 of the Social Encyclical, Laudato Si. Take note of important points that were
mentioned on the said chapters.

Provide 3-4 important points here:

1. We have all abused our common home in various of ways. Such as irresponsible use and abuse
of its goods that God has endowed it.
2. Due to this, it is important that we enter dialogue with all people in regard to this, as it affects all
people.
3. Although technology can increase our progression, it is still important to slow down and look at
reality in a different way. In other words, we need to take in consideration all the gifts God gave
us and not treat them merely as raw material for our use.

II. RESEARCH
In line with the idea presented on the said chapters, research on a news article on the manifestation
of human greed and selfishness during the COVID 19 Health Crisis that is happening today. Provide
the link of the news article that you were able to research.

III. ANALYSIS
List down the challenges provided by Pope Francis on the Encyclical:

List down 3-4 challenges:

1. We might abuse the gifts God has given. Giving in to our greed and selfishness, with a lack of
regard to other people.
2. Due to this greed, it will encourage anthropocentricism, which in turn will impact the whole
ecosystem.
3. Anthropocentricism will encourage technological progress that may push the boundaries of
what is ethical.

IV. ACTION
Based on what you have read on Pope Francis’ encyclical and the related article that you have
researched, write down possible responses/solutions in light of the current pandemic happening in
the world today.

List down 5-6 responses/solutions here:

1. People who panic-buy, or stockpile unnecessary amounts of goods should first consider that this
action is entirely selfish. These people have no regards to the people who may need these
goods.
2. People who also disregard the quarantine are also selfish. These are the ones who disregard the
most vulnerable of the population and are completely oblivious to the frontliners.
3. We should all help each other in this time of need. We must share our gifts to other people less
fortunate than us.
4. We need to enter meaningful dialogue and not spread misinformation.
5. All should lend our prayers and support to the people bravely risking their lives in face of this
pandemic.
