The Fear of the Lord (respect, honor, awe)

is the beginning of wisdom…
PROVERBS 9:10
My father grew up on a dairy farm in Alabama. He dreamed in highschool
of becoming a motel owner in Panama City Beach, Florida. Through
perseverance, hard work and while using his natural abilities as an athlete,
he became a two time All-American football player. He played nine years

PATRIOTISM IN

the most desirable regime to

were the leaders at the time,
Jesus basically said to pay
tribute or honor the laws they
were enforcing at the time.

called “what would Jesus do?” I would like to ask that question now about
being loyal to governmental leadership.
What would Jesus do? In Matthew 22, Jesus was confronted about whether
it is lawful (according to Jewish law, not Roman) to pay Roman taxes. Jesus
said in verse 19, “Show me the coin used for the tax.” And they brought him
a denarius. Then he said to them, “Whose head is this, and whose title?”
They answered, “The emperor’s.” Then he said to them, “Give therefore to
the emperor the things that are the emperor’s, and to God the things that
are God’s.” (continued on page 4)

PATRIOTISM IN TROUBLING TIMES
(continued from page 3)

To me, this is the heart of patriotism. It’s all about honor. To

be patriotic doesn’t mean that you agree with everything that is
happening. It doesn’t mean you agree with all the policies and
decisions made by the sitting government.
But is does mean that you honor the positions and ideals of your
nation. You can fly the flag, recite the pledge of allegiance, and
obey the laws of the land while peacefully protesting, expressing
dissent and voting your conscious. (And peaceful protest does not
include looting, burning and violence.} To dissent is acceptable,
to destroy is wrong and has to be condemned.
On September 9, 2011, my son Chris gave his all on the soil
of Afghanistan. We laid his body to rest a few weeks later
in the hollowed soil of Arlington National Cemetery. He died
defending a nation he loved and believed in. He didn’t vote for
the president that sent him into harm’s way, nor agree with
a lot of his policies and positions. Yet he fought to the death
to defend his nation and his nation’s ideals. Chris was a true
patriot. His life and death embodied the true spirit of honor.
May we endeavor to live every day in a way worthy of all the
true Patriot’s sacrifice.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!

SOUL PROSPERITY
Hang on to Healthy Thinking
Dr. Scarlett Horton

How can we stay positive in such a negative world? Is it possible to live free
from the depressed feelings that come from the bad reports we hear daily in our
world. One way we are able to combat the disturbing thoughts that drag us down
is through practicing gratitude. An attitude of gratitude is like a powerful dose of
medicine to our souls. The Lord knew this when he said, “In everything give thanks:
for this is the will of God concerning you,” I Thessalonians 5:18.
Let’s take a challenge of going through a twenty-four hour period without
complaining or griping about anything. Sounds easier than it might be. Often, we
are in such a habit of focusing and talking about the problems in life, that we do not
recognize how pessimistic we have become.
When we turn our minds toward the Lord Jesus, His goodness and His grace, we
