Water Filtration
One way in which water in naturally filtered in the water cycle is through the
process of evaporation and condensation. During evaporation, substances dissolved in
water are left behind as water is transformed into vapor. When vapor condenses, it
becomes relatively pure liquid water.

Objective: Replicate the process of filtration using a simple setup.

Materials:
4 cups of dirt or sand
12 stones
2 liters of water
large glass bowl with tall sides similar to a mixing bowl
short glass
clear plastic wrap

Procedure
1. Mix the dirt, sand, and water in a large bowl.
2. Place a clean and empty short glass in the center of the bowl.
3. Place the bowl outside under the sun.
4. Cover the bowl with the plastic wrap and weigh down the edges with the remaining
rocks.
5. Place one rock on the plastic wrap directly over the cup. Allow the bowl to remain in
the sun for several hours.
6. Observe the water in the bowl (it should contain the dried dirt).
7. Observe the water in the cup (it should collect water dripping from the plastic bag
and contain some relatively clean water free of mud).

Variation
Add food coloring to water to demonstrate that this process does not remove all
pollutants. This may be done along with the procedure above.

Guide Questions:
1. How are the two processes responsible for purifying the water present in the
experiment?

-The process of evaporation was responsible for the changing of water from its
liquid state into gas (vapor) as it separates from the mixture of water and sand.
Later, when the water vapor changes into its liquid state (moist) again, the
process of condensation took place as the water accumulates in the plastic wrap.
The condensed liquid then drops to the glass as a clearer and cleaner water than
the one in the original mixture.

2. Where else do you see condensation in the setup?

-We also saw condensation in the setup when the water from the plastic wrap are
dripping slowly to the short glass.

3. How does this process work on Earth?

-The process in this activity is the same with the process that occur on Earth in a
regular basis, like when the Sun is up, the water from the ground evaporates to
the atmosphere in the form of a water vapor through the process of evaporation.
As it cools down, it then condenses to form clouds in accumulation, where the
water vapor is converted back to liquid and poured down back to the ground in the
form of rain.

4. What does the plastic wrap represent in the natural world?

-The plastic wrap in this activity represent atmosphere in the natural world.

5. What would happen to the results if the plastic wrap was dirty?

-If the plastic wrap from the beginning is dirty, there would still be process of
evaporation and condensation that will occur, however the resulting water in the
cup might also be filled with dirt.
Conclusion:
In this laboratory activity, we came up with the conclusion that the setup was very
helpful in allowing students like us to observe in a simple way how evaporation and
condensation occurs in the world through analogic materials. It also allowed us to
realize that these two processes aid in the filtration of dirty water and we can reflect
from it that these processes are the reason why the water is continuously purified or
filtered.
