The Pearson Prize Guidelines

What’s the Pearson Prize?

An exciting new prize sponsored by Pearson, this prize has been designed to give you an
opportunity to share Pearson’s passion to perform and ACS’s commitment to excellence and to
amplify your ambitions and accelerate towards them.

As the winning society, you will receive!


£300 to spend towards their society budget – which can be spent at your discretion
A copy of a recent Penguin title for each society member
A copy of the most recent issue of The Economist Newspaper
In addition, the prize-wining society will be recognised at the 2011 ACS Leadership summit1.

Who can apply?

The Prize is only open to ACS within the AC Company’s A20 group 2and their constituent members.

What do you have to do?

Pearson is offering £300 to the ACS society that runs the best campaign, event or activity to
promote the Pearson Diversity Summer Internship.

To participate in the competition, your society must:

1. Declare an intention to compete by 11th February 2011


2. Organise a great event, activity or campaign to promote the Pearson Diversity Summer
Internship by the 31st March 2011
3. Submit a report on your event, activity or campaign by June 20th 2011
4. Observe all the rules of the competition

Okay! We want to compete – what do we do?


To enter the competition, send your completed competition for to
careers@africancaribbeansociety.com by 11th February – declaring your intention to compete and
your proposed event, activity or campaign.

Okay! We’ve entered the competition – what next?

Now it’s over to you – between February and March 31st 2011, you must organise a great event,
activity or campaign that promotes the Pearson Diversity Summer Internship to eligible candidates
– details of who is eligible for the internship are below.

Who is eligible for the Pearson Diversity Summer Internship?

The Pearson Diversity Summer Internship is a positive action programme for UK final year students
and graduates from visible ethnic minority backgrounds. It’s run under The UK Equality Act.

What are the Judging Criteria for the competition?

1. Creativity – We will take into account the amount of creativity and originality involved in
promoting the programme; your level of effective organisational skills and discipline.

2. Effectiveness – This will be based primarily on how many potential candidates for the
programme you are able to reach in your promotion; this should be measurable and
verifiable. In particular, how much the event, activity or campaign was able to reach beyond
your society’s membership to a wider student and/or graduate audience – and on if there is
a direct link between the projects success and eligible applicants to the programme.

3. Presentation – The amount of effort put into ensuring your event, activity or campaign not
only is effective but has a good visual, aural or personal effect on participants.

What should be in our competition report?

The following elements should be in your competition report, however, a submission form will be
sent to you once you have declared your interest in competing.

1. A written report – no longer than 1, 000 – 1, 250 words on your activity.

2. Supportive audio-visual documentation – this can be photos, videos/audio or any


combination of these mediums you see fit.

3. The names of all main organisers – and what their roles were in the project.

4. A brief PowerPoint presentation incorporating the above information.

5. A short written statement, (250 words) on why you believe your society should win the
prize.

What’s the timeline for the competition?

- 11th February – Declare intention to compete

- 31st March – Final day for organising events, activity or campaign. Ideally your events will
take place anytime between 11th February and 31st March.

- 20th June – Final deadline for report submission – your submission can be sent through any
time between 31st March and 20th June.

- 1 July – Competition Winner announced


What are the rules for the competition?

1. All activity undertaken for the prize must be legal.

2. Pearson undertakes no responsibility for the health and safety of participants involved in
any event or other activity connected to the Pearson ACS Prize.

3. The Prize is only open to ACS Societies and their constituent members. Pearson reserves the
right to revise this criterion at any time.

4. No participating society may spend above the amount of the prize money.

5. Participating societies must refer all queries regarding eligibility for the internship
programme to the Pearson Diversity & Inclusion team.

6. Societies can take an open and creative approach to their submission – using a variety of
formats.

7. Societies will maintain a level of professionalism in keeping with Pearson’s identity and
purpose in running the summer internship programme.

8. All participating societies must provide a submission pack: which can include: text, video or
audio summary and documentation of your activity or campaign.

9. All communication in connection with the prize and the internship programme must contain
the following text – “The Pearson Diversity Summer Internship is a positive action
programme run under the Equality Act”

10. To be eligible for the prize – events, activities or campaigns for the prize must take place
during the internship application period January – March 2011.

How do we get hold of promotional material for the internship?

All participating societies should request promotional materials - (pens, leaflets, as well as
links/access to videos and digital material about the programme) - from Pearson. Contact will be
provided one entry is approved.

About the Pearson Diversity Summer Internship

The Pearson Diversity Summer Internship Programme is a paid eight or twelve week (journalism)
internship run by Pearson, an international media company with world leading businesses including
Penguin Books, The Financial Times and Pearson International.

It is a positive action programme aimed at addressing the under-representation of graduates from


visible ethnic minority backgrounds in the media and publishing industries, and Pearson, in
particular.*

Each year, Pearson recruits between 25-30 graduates from visible ethnic minority backgrounds to
carry out internships in various areas including: Journalism, Marketing, Publicity,
Editorial (books),Sales, Internal and External Communications, Project Management, Business
Administration, Research and Production (books).

The programme has been nominated for an innovation in recruitment award by RFO, the leading
campaigning organisation for race equality in the UK, and has also been recognised in the national
and industry press as an innovative and successful programme for increasing diversity in the
publishing industry. It's not all graft and no fun, our interns socialise and build long lasting
supportive relationships with each other which continue long after the end of their formal
internship programme.

Pearson reserves the right to revise the competition rules, elements of the prize and any
constituent element of the prize without prior notification.

Participation in The Pearson Prize competition constitutes an agreement to participate in


promotion relevant to the Pearson Prize and the Pearson Diversity Summer Internship, including
consent to use audio-visual, photographic and written material produced, provided, or utilised as
part of the Pearson Prize competition.
