IGNATIO DE LOYOLA: A REFLECTION PAPER

The movie Ignacio de Loyola was truly a great and inspiring movie. In this movie, we
follow the journey of Ignatio de Loyola. The man who become the founder of the Jesuit Order.
Ignacio de Loyola started out as a knight. A man full of arrogance and pride. He then gets injured
during a battle and it is through this event that he finds his place with God. He is first seen
fighting enemy soldiers but later on he faces even bigger opponent. One he cannot vanquish with
just the swing of his sword, His inner demons. We can see how in his pilgrimage he showed
immense care for the sick and poor, he aids, feeds and even begs for them as well. Although he
felt like this was not his true self and felt like his actions was just potraying a façade- This is the
voice that whispers in his ear intending to bring him down. We see the reification of his struggle
to forgive himself. He also begins preaching his methods that is unpopular in Pamplona, thus he
is imprisoned and investigated. During the inquisition, they find a journal that he has not
submitted alone with his other writings, a journal that he has had since he was a soldier. In the
journal, his vices and malicious thoughts are revealed but they are mostly self-deprecating. The
battle with his inner demons and the struggle to forgive his self are also revealed as they read an
entry of Ignacio self harming with a whip. Yet through all this, Ignacio then realises that the
voice in his head isn’t his, but the Devil’s. He then finally forgives himself, is acquitted, then
continuous his journey in studying theology and preaching. It showcased the ideal qualities a true
Atenean must have. It showcase Cura Personalis, in the scenes where Ignacio cared for others.

pilgrimage. The movie was really enticing and gives a sense of relief when watched because we
can see that anyone, can rise from sin and vice to become a person who is closer to God and
closer to themselves. We witness the struggle of self forgiveness, which i am sure is imminent in
everyone. When Ignacio shunned himself from the world and became depressed, I honestly
related to him. During hard times we often put ourselves down and we don’t give ourselves
enough credit. Our judgment is clouded with guilt, therefore we drown ourselves in derogatory
opinions because we feel like we deserve it. Yet what is important is that we fight back and rise
above these negative thoughts. In times where I experience this, I take a moment to breathe and
pray. In turn, I find comfort in the silence knowing that God has my back, and gives me strength
to move forward and become a better person. The film taught me that we are given battles that
we can fight, and from those that are guised as a tragedy, opens a door for better opportunities.
From this we rise from our knees and continue to face our demons with our head held high
