Merriam Webster define social studies as a curriculum concerned with the study
of social relationships and the functioning of society and usually made up of courses in history, government, economics, civics, sociology, geography, and anthropology. It makes you informed and reasoned decisions for the public good citizens. Based on the topics presented by group, current trends in education that can be applied for crafting Social Studies curriculum are the emerging of technology and media or the education 4.0, experiential learning, bite-sized learning, the underground learning which students don’t learn to survive in the classroom but learn to survive in the real words, the content and knowledge, thinking critically and analytically and authentic learning of 21st century and many more. These trends can be applied in crafting social studies because social studies curriculum is a standards that provide a set of principles by which content can be selected and organized to build a viable, valid, and defensible social studies curriculum for grades form pre-K through 12. Apparently, how can I say that it is applicable in the Philippine context? It is applicable in Philippine context because we are now catching up like in any countries, not completely but we are in process. Technologies are gradually emerging, teachers are more passion to teach what students can do in the future and also in studying social curriculum can help students to know what the issues and trends are happening in our country. The demands and expectations are now visible particularly the challenges of present curriculum in social studies can now cope. The qualities and competencies of a social studies teacher are now enhancing for better learning of the students. Eventually, the current trends in Education that can be applied for crafting social studies curriculum are applicable in the Philippine context.
