QUESTION 1

Activities and resources are very important in teaching of grammar in the classroom.
Selecting good resources and activities can ensure our pupils to have a better
understanding on the topic during the teaching and learning process.

There are several factors that need to be considered on the selection of

resources in order to teach grammar in the classroom. First and foremost, it is
important for the resources to have an interest value. The resources selected must
contain some illustrations in order to attract the them during the teaching and
learning process. They should consider that boys and girls do have different
interests. For examples, for the boys, teachers can include illustration like robots or
superheroes while for girls, they can include illustrations like unicorn or teddy bear.
This is because those illustrations can attract their attention and helping them to
focus during the classroom. Next, the resources must consider the learners’ level of
proficiency. It is important to check the difficuilty of language used in resources
especially the authentic ones such as newspaper articles and books. Morley and
Guariento (2001) claim that the purpose of using authentic resources is to prepare
students for their social lives. In other words, the authentic resources are used in
order to close the language gap between classroom knowledge and real life so it is
applicable in considering the learners’ level of proficiency. Different pupils do have
different level of proficiency. Teachers have to identify their level of proficiency first in
the classroom and divide the pupils according to their own group. Teachers can
select two different resources for each group and distribute them to the pupils. This
is to make sure the pupils to have a better understanding with the words that being
used in the text.

Furthermore, the resources selected must consider the learner’s maturity.

This is because it can trigger the pupils to comprehend something familiar to them
such as their family or favourite past times. When teachers select these kind of
resources which actually familiar with their daily life, it can help the pupils to
memorise all the grammatical terms in the classroom. This is because pupils tend to
memorise things better when it is something that can create happiness and related
with them. Moreover, teachers can include resources that consist of the learners’

prior knowledge. In the resources, the content that can trigger their prior knowledge
can stimulate the students thinking and help them to think out of the box and relate it
with their past experiences. For examples, teachers can ask the pupils to identify the
types of sentences in the resources. If it is in past tense and the resources are about
a picnic with family, teacher can choose any students to share their experiences
going for a picnic with their family. It can help the pupils to relate their prior
knowledges with the content in the teaching and learning process.

As a result, suitable resources are really important to the pupils in the

classroom. Teachers need to choose appropriate resources all the time to ensure
teaching and learning take place effectively.

QUESTION 2

Bases on the paragraph given, there are several mistakes that can be identified:

Yesterday, my family and I go (went) to the seaside. We see (saw) many people
there. Later we swim (swam) in the sea. After swimming, we sit (sat) on a picnic mat.
We eat (ate) our lunch together. I feel (felt) very happy because I enjoy (enjoyed)
myself very much.

In the paragraph given, the words that are being highlighted should be in the past
tense form because the situation is in the past. All the paste tense identified in the
paragraphs consist of irregular verbs except for the word enjoyed which is the
regular verbs. This is because the words do not form its simple past tense or its past
participle by adding “ed’ or “d” to the base form. These kind of mistakes frequently
happen in the text because pupils tend to confuse on something that has already
happen in the past or in the present.

Based on the mistakes that have been identified, I can plan an activity that
can be used in the presentation stage to help remedy the error. Before that, in the
set induction I have showed a picture on family going for a picnic at the beach. I will
choose random pupils to share their experiences going for ac picnic with their family.
In the presentation stage, I will explain about the verb tense using the flashcards. I
will explain the definition and the comparison between the present and past tense. I
will explain that in order to see comparison on the present and the past tense, the
pupils have to analyse the keyword that shows that the situation has already happen
in the past. For examples, if they find the world like “yesterday” or “last Friday’ in the
sentence, it shows that the actions or situations are being done in the past. After the
students already have a better idea on the verb tense, I will read aloud a text about a
picnic at the beach. The pupils have to focus on the text during the reading aloud
which is in the past tense. The teacher then will provide a flashcard of different
colours for the pupils. For example, the teacher will provide yellow flashcards
represent the present tense and the red flashcards for the past tense. All the past
tense words that have been included in the text such as “ate” and “went” will be

included the flashcards. The teacher then will show both the flashcards that
represent the present and the past tense side to side in front of the pupils. This is to
ensure that the pupils can make the comparison between the present and past
tense. For example, the word swim which is being written on the yellow flashcard
and swam on red flashcards are being showed to the pupils. Next, I will ask two or
three students to pronounce the word correctly. After that, I will explain on the
difference between the two flashcards which represent the present and the past
tense. I will showed more different words that being included in the text in order to
make them have a full understanding on the tense such as “sit” and ‘swim”. Once I
finish explaining the difference between the present and past tense using the two
different colours, I will come out with a white flashcard and showed the word that has
been written there. In the last part, I will ask students to recognise the word either it
is a present or the past tense word and guide them to the practise stage.

As a conclusion, there are several ways and activities that can be done in
order to correct the mistakes of the pupils. The teacher has to choose the best
activity in order to make the students to understand the lesson better.
