History behind gothic architecture
● Originated in Europe in the mid 12th
century.
● Defining feature is the pointed arch.
● The word “Goth” referred to people
who held power in certain regions of
Europe and were considered to be In
barbaric tribe.
● Although the word “Gothic” developed
a new meaning to the architectural
style after the establishment of the
Holy Roman Empire.
Architect:Hugues Libergier
● He was the first to
develop the gothic
architectural style
for the Abbey
Church of Saint
Nicaise in Reims,
France around 1231.
Architect:Jean D'Orbais
● He was an architect
of the High Gothic
style and the first
of the four
architects of the
Cathedral of Reims.
Architect:François Debret
● He was a famous
architect who
helped design the
Basilica of
Saint-Denis in
France. It is now
a cathedral.
